I've tried the instructions in the manual and can't get my laser
printer to work through the USB.

Do I need a parallel card?

Can you print from Linux? If so, did you make sure that you
designated that printer as default in Linux? If you've done that,
then you should be able to just print to the Default Printer that is
installed automatically in XP.

I think there is something else wrong, Leonardo. I can print from
Linux (Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS) with no problem, but not from inside my
Windows (XP Pro) session.

Yes, my USB connected printer is defined as the default in Linux. It
is an HP OfficeJet v40 All-in-One Printer / Copier / Scanner / FAX. I
have never had a problem amking it work within Linux or Windows
before.

In Windows, the default printer status is "Offline" and I cannot get
Windows to see it as "Online." The host PDF printer shows the same
status and behaves the same way.

Both printers accumulate print jobs in Windows, but these jobs do not
appear in the print queue in Linux otherwise I might be able to
release them from the Host.

The User Guide says that I could install a Windows printer within the
Windows session and print to it, but that should be unnecessary.

I am stuck.

Perhaps you are using Windows XP with SP3? If so it appears Microsoft
broke the SMB printing yet again, and we posted a workaround to the
old forums:

(Note the old forums have been overrun by spammers now, but at least
some important data is still there like the above mentioned post).

Please report back and let us know if it works.

Thanks,

Leo Reiter
