This pair of mating Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus)was observed in the Mt Mee area about 50
km NW of Brisbane, Qld, Australia.
The Monarch (or Wanderer) is a recent arrival in Australia. One of its larval plants is the
introduced cotton bushes.
It is now fairly common over much of the east coast and has established itself in Perth on the west
coast.
Although it is well known for its mass migration in North America, migration in Australia is less
well defined.
It is a fairly large butterfly at 93 mm (m) and 92 mm (f).
