Welcome to the Programming Your Radio Shack Scanner article. At some point, we all end up scratching our heads, and wishing there were an easier wayto program our scanners, particularly when there is a new memory management method involved. Those that were involved with banked scanning for years often find the new Object Oriented scanners particularly difficult.

The links below will be a big help in getting over the hurdle. The Easier to Read manuals for the various RS scanners are linked below. In addition we have a number of programming shortcuts for older RS radios, as well as user's guides for some of the more popular programming packages.

Most newer PCs have no serial ports, so you need to make the connection between the scanner and PC via an USB device.Please see our Connecting scanners via USB article for more information and tips on how to set this up properly.

The following chart is an up to date version of all RS model numbers and the BuTel package that supports it. Note that in some cases, GRE and Whistler had equivalent models, and these are also cross referenced here. Also note that before RS withdrew from the scanner market, they reissued some of their scanners with new model numbers.

If you imported info into ARC500 and/or uploaded programming to your scanner and you receive the message "Nothing Enabled" on your radio, you need to assign the frequencies or talkgroups to a "scanlist". This can be done easily in the software by going to the scanlist column next to the alpha tag column, in either Coventional or Talkgroup under Scannable Objects, and typing in the scanlist number. When each frequency and/or talkgroup has been assigned a scanlist you can then proceed with uploading the information to the scanner.

First make sure you plugged the USB cable in the PC/IF jack and not the headphone jack. Also verify that the led's on the USB cable are flashing during the data transfer.If they are not flashing you selected the incorrect usb/com port and/or the driver is not installed correctly. Re-install the USB driver. Also try a different USB port.

This message usually indicates that a firewall is blocking the software to access the internet. Add the ARC software to the safelist of your firewall software.You may also see this message on satellite internet connections due to the latency on those networks. The webimport may not work on satellite internet, use dialup or cable/DSL instead. 'Hughesnet' users must disable the Turbopage option.

Police scanners can be useful tools for a variety of reasons. They range from emergency-based necessities for some to pure entertainment for others. Many of the best police radio scanners are sold for an affordable price, especially at Radio Shack.

Before you begin anything, make sure that you read the manual that comes with your police scanner. There are variations in models and styles that can lightly impact how each of them operates. You should take note of any differences and apply them to your model.

On rare occasions, the model will affect how the programming works. By reading the manual, you can prevent delays due to confusion in the model. If you do not have the manual, search online for a copycat or a scanned version. It will come in handy in the future as you become familiar with this product.

Going on the internet is the easiest and most accurate way to figure out the local frequencies that operate in your area. You can go in person, but to save time, you might search online. There are dozens of resources available to help you.

When all is silent, this step is complete. The squelch has been set and will continue to quiet the background radio noise while you listen. If you still hear interference, you have not turned the squelch far enough.

Once you have done this step, you have successfully programmed your first channel into the Radio Shack police scanner. Now, you can navigate to that channel whenever you would like to listen to what is going on.

Some frequencies are the same across the board on a national level. These can be tuned into from anywhere, and they do not change very often. They are important to note and program into your police scanner.

As stated before, all of these frequencies are accessible across the country. They do not change, though many are only used in case of emergencies. Still, it may be beneficial to have some of these stored inside your police scanner.

These changes often occur at least twice a year. Take note of these changes if you listen in on these channels. You should be prepared to reprogram your device when this happens so that you do not lose connections to this source.

With emergency service frequencies, it is also critical to note whether it is legal to tune in to these in the area where you live. In some states, you can. Others require permission. In the most extreme cases, you are not permitted to listen to these kinds of frequencies in any capacity.

If you have more than one channel that you would like to program into your scanner, you can do that. Simply repeat the process by following the same simple steps. Once this is complete, you will have access to as many channels as you see fit for your scanner.

Another great feature of many Radio Shack scanners is the ability to search. Once you have everything programmed, you can bounce between channels with no problem. From weather to local crime, you will have the ability to be up-to-date on everything that is going on around you.

Though there is often a limit to the number of channels that can be programmed into a police scanner, that number can be massive. Many advanced models can hold as many as 1,000 programmed channels before they reach their limit.

With any Radio Shack police scanner, make sure that you do your research ahead of time to find a product that will suit your individual needs. Not all of these are made equal, but there is most certainly a Radio Shack police scanner that will work for your listening needs.

The TRS-80 Micro Computer System (TRS-80, later renamed the Model I to distinguish it from successors) is a desktop microcomputer launched in 1977 and sold by Tandy Corporation through their Radio Shack stores. The name is an abbreviation of Tandy Radio Shack, Z80 [microprocessor].[4] It is one of the earliest mass-produced and mass-marketed retail home computers.[5]

While the software environment was stable, the cassette load/save process combined with keyboard bounce issues and a troublesome Expansion Interface contributed to the Model I's reputation as not well-suited for serious use. Initially (until 1981), it lacked support for lowercase characters which may have hampered business adoption.

An extensive line of upgrades and add-on hardware peripherals for the TRS-80 was developed and marketed by Tandy/Radio Shack. The basic system can be expanded with up to 48 KB of RAM (in 16 KB increments), and up to four floppy disk drives and/or hard disk drives. Tandy/Radio Shack provided full-service support including upgrade, repair, and training services in their thousands of stores worldwide.

By 1979, the TRS-80 had the largest selection of software in the microcomputer market.[6] Until 1982, the TRS-80 was the bestselling PC line, outselling the Apple II by a factor of five according to one analysis.[4]

The broadly compatible TRS-80 Model III was released in the middle of 1980. The Model I was discontinued shortly thereafter, primarily due to stricter Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations on radio-frequency interference to nearby electronic devices.[7][8] In April 1983, the Model III was succeeded by the compatible TRS-80 Model 4.

Following the original Model I and its compatible descendants, the TRS-80 name became a generic brand used on other unrelated computer lines sold by Tandy, including the TRS-80 Model II, TRS-80 Model 2000, TRS-80 Model 100, TRS-80 Color Computer, and TRS-80 Pocket Computer.

In the mid-1970s, Tandy Corporation's Radio Shack division was a successful American chain of more than 3,000 electronics stores. Among the Tandy employees who purchased a MITS Altair kit computer was buyer Don French, who began designing his own computer and showed it to the vice president of manufacturing John V. Roach, Tandy's former electronic data processing manager.[9][10] Although the design did not impress Roach, the idea of selling a microcomputer did. When the two men visited National Semiconductor in California in mid-1976, Homebrew Computer Club member Steve Leininger's expertise on the SC/MP microprocessor impressed them. National executives refused to provide Leininger's contact information when French and Roach wanted to hire him as a consultant, but they found Leininger working part-time at Byte Shop. Leininger was unhappy at National, his wife wanted a better job, and Texas did not have a state income tax. Hired for his technical and retail experience, Leininger began working with French in June 1976. The company envisioned a kit, but Leininger persuaded the others that because "too many people can't solder", a preassembled computer would be better.[11][12][13][14]

Having spent less than US$150,000 on development, Radio Shack announced the TRS-80 (Tandy Radio Shack) at a New York City press conference on August 3, 1977.[18] It cost US$399 ($2006 today), or US$599 ($3012 today) with a 12" monitor and a Radio Shack tape recorder; the most expensive product Radio Shack previously sold was a US$500 stereo. The company hoped that the new computer would help Radio Shack sell higher-priced products, and improve its "schlocky" image among customers. Small businesses were the primary target market, followed by educators, then consumers and hobbyists; despite its hobbyist customer base, Radio Shack saw them as "not the mainstream of the business" and "never our large market".[12][19][17][20][21][13]
