problem getting this to work first time

Hi - I am trying to get this to work on my site, and when I try it out
(even on the wikipublisher main page) I get a

tbrplent /usr/local/bin/tbrplent references a file that does not exist

Do I need to download and install the server on my local machine?
Also, do I need to register my URL (seems to say this in the setup
instructions, but there is no indication of how to register on the
page)

It looks as if the service provider hosting wikipublisher has changed
something and this has broken the service. I'll get onto them and sort
it out.

And yes, you will need to add your site to the list of allowed urls --
follow the Register URL link in the wikipubosher.org side bar.

Great -

I think the Register URL link is missing something - I can't find
anywhere to actually register - it seems to be just a list of sites.

The other problem is now fixed it seems - I can generate a PDF

When the hosting service provider updated the server, they omitted one
of the binaries on which the pdf server depends. Now fixed and working
again, as you have discovered. Thank you for alerting us to the
problem.

We always encourage people to download install their own version of
the wikibook pdf server software. This gives you as the user more
control and keeps the loads down on the wikipublisher server.

I'm glad it's now working!

Well I didn't get that far - I can generate the PDF from your pages
but not mine - I get a "Software Error: document at ... does not
appear to be in Wikipublisher XML:" (complete message below). I've
followed the instructions for installing this, and see all the
required buttons, but don't seem to get the final PDF. I copied the
wikipublisher homepage to a test page on my site so I was sure it was
not something on my page that was doing this, but still get the same
error - as you can see below. Its says "check your configuration for
errors", but all I've done is the steps on http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/Cookbook/PublishPDF
is there some other configuration I need to do first to get this to
work?

It looks as if you have something in your config.php file that is over-
writing the $ActionSkin['print'] setting in wikipublisher. The
document generated from the wiki is wikibook xml content, wrapped in
pmwiki's html template.

Can you see what might be causing this?

To see what you should get, use the View XML button on the "Download"
screen. It should start like this:

I only have a
$Skin =
'pmwiki';

in the config.php file, nothing setting $ActionSkin as far as I Can
tell. Any other things that may be causing this?
I am using PHP 5.2.9 in case that is relevant?

Let's check 2 things:

First, make sure you have installed the skin directories from
wikipublisher/pub/skins

Next, at the end of your config.php file, add this line

echo $ActionSkin['print'];

Then, from the wikipublisher "download" screen, press the View XML
button.

You should see it echo 'latexprint'.

If nothing in config.php is over-writing $ActionSkin['print'], then
the most likely explanation is a missing latex skin, causing pmwiki to
revert to the default skin.

I see - I had the latexprint skin in skins/print/latexprint

now it works although I ran into one error and got to a screen that
sent an error report, which I did - will look at that page now and
see if I can find what is causing that problem

Pressing the "debug" button instead of the download button should help
you work out the cause.

First, "xmllint" will report any xml validity errors.

Then, you get the xml of the page, followed by latex diagnostics --
towards the end of this, if there is an error, there will be an
"emergency stop" message, giving the line number in the latex output
where the error occurred. After the latex diagnostics, it shows the
xml again, with all remote image addresses replaced by local file
references. Finally, it shows the generated latex code.

To debug, you generally have to work backwards from the latex line
number to the source xml, to find out what it doesn't like. So it
helps to have a "minimum non-working example" -- the smallest possible
document that produces the problem. This makes it easier for us to
replicate, and hopefully fix, the problem.

In most cases, if the xml is valid it will produce a pdf, but there
are still a few "edge cases".

Hi JR _
That's great - debug totally pointed me to the problem and it was an
easy fix - a bad character in the input.

This tool looks great - I am going to use it for a grad. class I'm
running and will install my own server in January as soon as I can.

Excellent, glad it's working.

The sky is blue, the ocean is sparkling, the hills are green --
holidays don't get much better than this!

Hope your server install goes well -- watch out if it is Fedora, as a
couple of people have encountered a bug in the repository's latex
build.
