Does the downloaded Wikipedia database include pictures? If not, is
there any chance for downsized versions of article pictures in next
versions?

If there is ever a way to compress pictures to an insanely small size,
it will be done. While ostensibly it would be possible for the very
small Wiki databases we compress, the English version is 2.6GB with NO
images at all. Images comprise a huge amount of the space the entire
Wikipedia eats up. If handheld devices evolve to hold 100+ GB of data,
I suppose a version could be made. It would be expensive, though,
because Apple won't even serve the 2.6GB download so we'd have to
serve it up and the bandwidth cost would be significant. Compressed,
the full Wikipedia with text and images would be ~76GB. Also, many of
the images have copyright issues attached to them and so cannot be
included standard in our app.
Think of this: the full database dump (text only, uncompressed) of the
Wikipedia is 800GB. Huge!
