things look dead

I was just about to point somebody to the Last Language Textbook page,
but I realized some things are making a particularly poor first impression.

* I click on the participate page. From there under "learn more", there
are links to the LLT wiki page, the blog (which has not seen an update
in over four months), and the LLT mailing list, which is essentially
dead (and has never been alive).

* From here, if I click on the "main wiki site" for the LLT, I am
presented with more choices. "The Plan" is informative, "Progress
summary" is a blank page, "The Materials" is also blank, and "Get
involved" links me back where I came from.

* The lastlangtxtbook identi.ca and twitter accounts have not been
updated sine July.

* From wikiotics.org, the "Contact" page links to a bunch of things,
none of which have seen any activity in 1/3 of a year. The sole
exception is a post I made to this mailing list in January, which went
without reply.

None of these things are giving the impression that the project is
particularly alive. Sure, I know Ian is doing a lot of things in the
background, but the rest of the world knows nothing of this. I think we
need to make a concerted effort to get the word out about what we are doing.

And I think we can begin by making an effort to consolidate things. In
particular, we need fewer communication channels, easier to navigate and
updated more frequently. I think we need to scrap the LLT mailing list,
but I don't think that solves all that much alone.

Thoughts?

Hey guys,

the internet where I am is the slowest I have seen since the mid 90's,
I can't even open the site, so I'll rely on your comment, but I think
the conclusion that there are too many communication channels makes
sense. Also doing things without letting anyone know feels like a
waste of time.

Unfortunately I don't have time, nor proper access to contribute
anything while I'm out in the field, so I can only second Jim's
opinion and wish you good luck!

Laurent

I think that's probably a good idea. I was much too ambitious with
creating the separate accounts for the LLT social media and mailing list
portions.

At the moment I am inclined to scrap everything but the main "wikiotics"
accounts, mailing list, and the ductus-devel list, though I could also
be convinced to fold that in to a single list.

What might be ideal is to have a single "news" site that offers up all
the different bits of project activity: announcements, campaign news
like the LLT, social media blips, and development mail. We could
probably get that with a standard wordpress install using different tags
for each type of news. Then we can just use the wordpress
"url.org/category/TAGNAME/" format if we want to link people to a
particular portion of the news.

How does that sound to you folk?

I will also go through on Thursday and update the LLT website text to
give it a more current feel and reflect the ongoing work.

I like having the separate list for ductus-developers, as the discussion
can be very technical and make the project seem unapproachable. I don't
think having that extra communication channel is making things look dead
from any perspective.

I think that sounds great.

I think this should be a top priority -- the sooner the better.
