Dear Shani,

Welcome to the editorial board of WikiJournal of Humanities! Please add a short bio of yourself here (or email it to me and I'll add it), as well as upload a photograph of yourself to this page.

I've added you to the board mailing list (WJHb...@googlegroups.com) using this email address. Let me know if you'd prefer to use a different one.

Here is some further information, if you haven't read already:

  • Process guidelines for editors here
  • Private board information (login details etc) here
  • List of articles in the pipeline here
  • You're also welcome to comment on the wiki forum here.

We look forward to working with you,

Jackie Koerner
On behalf of the WikiJournal of Humanities editorial board

Hi Jackie & all,

Thanks so much for accepting me! I was really looking forward to this, and will be happy to help. However, as I told Thomas, as a WMF board member, I cannot officially be part of a board of any official affiliate.

Allow me to explain - When I applied, it was months before the election results. I thought I'll be able to get on board, learn the work, and if elected, will resign and remain as an advisor to the board if that will be helpful. I didn't know the application process will take so long.
That means I was unable to learn the work before becoming a member of the BoT.

So now, I leave it to you to decide what to do in this case: if it's helpful to have me in a capacity of advisor to the board, I'll happily do it (assuming someone can brimg me up to spead in terms of how you work and what type of help I can offer). If not, then that's ok as well, and I might ask to join the board as I finish my duties to the BoT.

Looking forward to your thoughts,
Shani.

Hi Shani (et al),

I've marked you down as position=Adviser (i.e. non-voting) for now whilst we check what works best to avoid any COI over your role on the WMF board of trustees.

My understanding is that WMF trustees cannot be on the board of an affiliate. My interpretations would be that:
  • WikiJournal User group members = editorial board members + associate editors + authors + peer reviewers + participants with >30 edits to wikijournal spaces
  • WikiJournal User Group board = The three editorial boards + administrative board (who need have no connection to any particular journal)
What are others' thoughts?

I'll also loop in James Heilman, since he was on the editorial board of WikiJMed for a time before he was also a WMF trustee, so he may also be well-placed to interpret best-practice and interpretation.

All the best,
Thomas

think that being on an editorial board of an academic journal is something's ng different than being on an executive board of an organization.

whenever someone asks "should we run it by legal", we usually should. Nevertheless, I have to say that I had to look it up to make sure if I'm not on the editorial board myself, as in my mind this is entirely different than being on an executive board (and very common in academic world)

It is, but this specific editorial board is also an affiliate, so there's no question in my mind that I shouldn't be on that board.
That said, I see no reason why I can't contribute in a capacity of adviser, like I do for the Wikipedia & Education UG and like James & I do for Wikimedia Medicine. We are allowed to continue our volunteer work, just not be on any board to avoid COI.

Shani.
