WE e-Newsletter; Technical Discussion

(Please recall earlier discussions of e-Newsletter)

 

I am not that much sound in the technicalities of e-Newsletter, however let me start this discussion with the following note.

 

I understand that we have following options with regards to an eNewsletter.

 

• Text only newsletter: Newsletter will be in the text format and pasted in the mail.
• Text and attached HTML version: Text version will be the part of the email and HTML version will be an attachment.
• Online eNewsletter: In this method HTML newsletter will be added to the website and the link will be posted to those in the mailing list.
• HTML only eNewsletter : It is seen reported that though most email programs allow to send HTML only newsletters, it may create reading problems for some.

 

In the event of creating HTML newsletter http://www.phplist.com/ is an open source option.

Hi Anil --

Wow Anil --- You're dedication and the time you donate to WikiEducator is an inspiration for all of us!

Following the wiki approach -- I think that it would be appropriate for us to collaborate on the authorship of the newsletter in the wiki. We can then decide on alternatives for distribution. 

Given the large number of WikiEducator members from the developing world, I would be mindful of including this as an html newsletter or attachment.  Perhaps the best will be to provide links to an online version on the wiki and optional link to download in print format. When working on dialup -- forced downloads of large messages can be irritating :-)

The WikiEd technical team will be able to advise us on alternatives for the distribution list --- but this can wait until we get the first edition completed. Given that most of the Southern hemisphere will be slowing down for the holiday season, I think you're right in waiting till the new year.

You may want to take a look at how Creative Commons distribute their e-Newsletter.  They send the text version in the body of the email with a link to a professional Typeset version on their wiki - which incidentally is also powered by Mediawiki with a cutomised skin see:

Hi, all.

 

A couple of comments and suggestions on the newsletter.

 

First, the newsletter should be sent out as e-mail in text-only. Many people, including myself, do not like html e-mail (an often thread on many forums). Personally, I do not have an internet connection at home and usually read such newsletters offline. I also use a text e-mail client (mutt rules :) ).

 

Second, I recommend that contributers send there material for the newsletter in plain text format. That way the formatting (for the online version) can be added by the editor(s) in a consistent way.

John - Same here, I went through all parts of it.  Loved the quote at the end.

 

I think your thermodynamic lesson works because it is very short and has plenty of examples.  Hopefully people will have the background knowledge to be able to apply your examples to the new concept (thermaldynamics).
