Ignite Philly

Ladies and gentlemen, believe it or not, Ignite Philly 8 is about to
happen. I can already hear your excitement buzzing through the air.
Johnny Brendas has once again donated their fantastic venue to our
cause. On September 22nd at 7pm another round of speakers will be
telling us what is igniting Philadelphia. The details: location:

Hi, Irv.

It's not exactly "open" mike.

Invited guests are given 5 minutes to speak and show slides or video... The process happens in front of an audience made up mostly of people I call the "30-somethings." I've not paid enough attention to know what they call themselves. I guess I ought to find out....

These people are Philadelphia's most active and energetic new entrepreneurs and creative types. They'd be in New York, but they like the more relaxed atmosphere that Philly offers. I also think they see Philly as being more open to their projects than New York might be.

I have heard of Ignite related to an energy company, but what is the composition of Ignite Philly 8?  Is this an open mike type forum? Please advise.

Unless it has changed in the past year or so, the significant thing about the Ignite format is that it is done with a PowerPoint presentation of exactly 20 slides, set to advance at exactly 15 seconds each.  (20 x 15 seconds = 5 minutes).  This highly structured format allows for great creativity.  It also ensures that presentations do not (cannot) run long.  It also requires a great deal of practice to make sure that your spoken words stay in sync with the slides.  I did  this format once (at the Educon conference, where they called it Encienda Educon).  It's fun to do and watch, as well as quite challenging to do well.
