Dear friends of The Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia project,

Our project continues to grow, this week with timely new coverage of the history of epidemics and public health. Visit http://philadelphiaencyclopedia.org to read a newly posted essay on the "Spanish Flu" pandemic of 1918-19 by historian Thomas Wirth. While you're there, check out the fascinating maps that have been added to John B. Osborne's essay on the cholera epidemic of 1832. These were created by a Philadelphia-based cartographer, who collected the data to produce maps showing the spread of the disease across the world, the United States, and in the mid-Atlantic region. As always, we invite your comments on these essays.

This will be the first in our series of thematic essays exploring well-known phrases that have described Philadelphia, from its origins to today.
