is it possible that I obtain a negative value of distance? e.g.
Category:Art rock musical groups
Category:Houses completed in 1800
SRMetric sr = configurator.get(SRMetric.class, "category","language", en.getLangCode());
I obtain a value of -0.0029.. is it plausible?

Apparently so :(
The category SR metric uses percentile normalization, so if it sees an unusually distant paper (e.g. one that must traverse the upper-most nodes in the category tree), it may get confused. I think it's safe to truncate at 0.000 for a lower bound. The percentile normalizer should probably do this by default. Would you mind opening an issue for it? I'll try to fix it in the next release.
