I've had occaission to compare a sample of veg patches plotted on the
field map images that are available through vtm.berkeley.edu against
those plotted on the published Elsinore VTM map. I find it
interesting that many small patches recorded in the field were not
included on the published version. It seems most likely, there is not
enough room to squeeze in the lettering for small patches at the
published scale of 1:125,000. Most of the patches I found missing
were in the area range of 1 - 5 hectares (~2.5 - 12.5 acres).

This is a good opportunity to improve data quality. Some review of
field data not previously included is probably in order but I'd
imagine most of it is good as is.

Interesting. Data sacrificed due to typographical limitations? When
the Davis team finishes digitizing the vegetation polygons the more
detailed veg map data should be even easier to compare to the other
maps.

Thanks for looking into this!

A mid-1930s Journal of Forestry article (authored by Wieslander)
states that photostat enlargements of the 30-minute quadrangles were
made for field use. This to provide a uniform scale for all field
work; maps were at the same scale as the 15-minute maps (~1/2 inch = 1
mile).
