Hey Ann,

We got this file out of CaSIL, so the state of my knowledge is just
what's in that FGDC metadata file we link to in the legend of the
MapBrowser, and your friend was talking about. However, that metadata
file is filled with info (it was linking to a stopgap page that then
linked to the real file, but I just updated our copy so it links
directly). Here's the link:

http://archive.casil.ucdavis.edu/casil/natural_resources/land_cover_and_veg/wieslander_veg_1945/veg1945wie.htm

and here are some relevant fields:

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data meets accuracy and quality standards within USBR MPGIS
Service Center. Errors do exist.

Original source data came from 1:100,000-scale USGS topographic
maps. Logical Consistency was established by utilizing the
1:100,000-scale USGS topographic map quadrangles as the maximum base
map scale. This database is not intended to be used as a land survey
or representation of land for conveyance or tax purposes. Further
details are discussed in the Process Step portion of this metadata.

Process_Step:

Process_Description:
Data are digitized using a Calcomp 9000 digitizer and Arc/Info
using the established quality control standards of the U.S. Bureau of
Reclamation, Mid-Pacific Region, MPGIS Service Center.

Entity_and_Attribute_Detail_Citation:
Source Map: U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service,
California Forest and Range Experiment Station, Stephen N. Wyckoff,

Vegetation Types of California, January 1, 1945 prepared under
direction of the Forest Survey, A.E. Wieslander in charge, H.A.
Jensen, Assistant.

Based upon study of aerial photos and photo indexes by L. E.
Berriman, R. H. Cron, A. O. Desch, C. E. Harlan, H. A. Jensen, M. J.
Nelson, E. J. Smithburg, and W. E. Turpin; Forest Survey, National
Forest, and National Park vegetation-type maps; personal observations
by H. A. Jensen, P. C. Johnson, and A. Fousett; and supplementary
references.

I hope that helps some. I'm also CCing the Wieslander list to see if
anyone else has any more light to shed on this layer.
