The circumflex or "hat" after a letter generally got translated to a 1
in our database. According to the plot data metadata, "Codes with a ^
over text were entered with a 1 following text. For ex. A with a ^ over
the A was entered as A1." I think the presence of an R^ means that
some of them never got converted to R1. R1 translates to Abies
magnifica, so I suspect that's what R^ is too.

W! is a mystery to me. Haven't seen it mentioned in the docs. Maybe
someone who worked on the plot data specifically can chime in here...

Ok, just heard from some one on the plot data team, and here's what
they had to say:

"Yes, R^ definitely means red fir. W! is very likely a data entry
error that should be W1, which is code for white fir."

Hope that helps.

Hi again,

I was just trying to chase down these uncorrected formatting issues and
having a little trouble. We don't actually have any plot data within
Lassen Volcanic National Park, so where did you get these data? Did
you perhaps find these codes in a different shapefile? If so, what
quad?

Thanks.
