Nigeria’s 2011 Election - A Revolutionary Step Forward!
IjawNation Forum Editorial Commentary
Wednesday, April 13, 2011
Judging by some of the electoral results announced thus far, it appears that Nigeria is witnessing a revolutionary change with this 2011 election. For the first time in Nigeria’s electoral history, it is clear that many political power brokers and their cronies have been forced to play by the dictates of a free and fair election from the trend we have seen with the announced results. It is very clear that Nigeria is finally moving forward to a brighter political future.
Many Nigerians in their thirties, forties, and fifties who have never voted in their lives before trooped out on April 9, 2011 to cast their votes for the first time ever, when asked why they were exercising their constitutional rights to vote for the first time, most said that they trusted the President’s promise that this election would be free and fair. This sentiment seems to be the general feeling all over the country, as many surveyed registered voters said they have an impeccable trust and confidence in what president Jonathan has said repeatedly - that, he would provide the platform to enable Nigerians exercise their right to choose their political leaders.
And indeed, the people have not been disappointed; president Goodluck Jonathan seems to have delivered on his promise to give Nigerians a free and fair election and the power to choose their representatives. True to his promise, the President created an environment that would ensure the people’s right to elect candidates they believe would work for them.
The people’s confidence in their president that he would deliver a free and fair election comes from many self sacrifices. To achieve this purpose, the president is leading by example to assure Nigerians that he is not above the law, by not using his incumbency to favor himself or his political party. This is something that Nigerians have always expected through rigged election results.
· Instead, Nigerians witnessed the appointment of an INEC Chairman that is given the full power to conduct a free and fair election for the country, without interference from even the president himself.
· Instead, Nigerians witnessed a political environment healthy of free and fair competition, and one where even opponents of the president, cannot in all honesty, say that the President directly or indirectly intimidated them, or used his position to usurp the political air around them.· Instead, Nigerians witnessed a President who maintained the composure of a gentle man and a genuine leader, in the face of unprecedented attacks on his person by political opponents and others, unhappy about his allowing a free and fair election.
The boldness of the President to promise a free and fair election and delivering on his promise is a feat that has never been experienced before in Nigeria. This is a welcome change in Nigeria and one greatly appreciated by many in the country. Thus, the president has proven that he is truly a change-agent.
Nigerians are now more than determined to continue this positive move forward; to this end, many are galvanizing support to assure victory for Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan - come this Saturday, April 16th. “Nigerians all over the country should appreciate this change process; we must collectively sustain this gain and prevent any slide that would throw us back to business as usual. We should all strive to elect Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for a full term so he could continue to provide the many changes Nigerians have been praying and longing for.”
It is obvious that President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has proved that free and fair election is possible in Nigeria; he has done that against all odds. But the biggest question still remains, come April 16th, would the Nigerian people give the President the mandate to bring about the other changes he has promised them? Well, with the success of this revolutionary change in Nigeria’s electoral history, many feel he is the best candidate to move Nigeria forward. Come this Saturday April 16, Nigerians should vote for Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan en mass.
