WINTER WEATHER OUTLOOK

Yes, the WIDEnet is still alive--I've been only covering major events as of late (of which there haven't been many) due to the first half of senior year crunch. Regardless, what follows is a statement on the first real taste of winter weather that snuck up on us; myself certainly included as my internet was down most of yesterday.

Summary: Regarding the potential event tomorrow, it currently looks to be minor to moderate in nature, with winter weather advisory level snow likely--enough to cause travel difficulties, especially during the evening rush hour, but not a major catastrophe. Although impacts Thursday afternoon and evening could be notable, I don't expect them to significantly affect Friday morning's commute, expect on isolated back roads to the south of DC.

Timing: Showers continue overnight. Throughout the morning (6-12PM), light rain will begin to fall, perhaps accompanied by at least some snow mixing in, especially in locations to the west of DC. As precipitation begins to pick up after noon, the rain will change over to moderate snow, with the heaviest snow falling sometime between 2PM and 6PM. Snow then quickly pulls out, with precipitation ending before midnight.

Accumulations: I have a fairly high confidence (>60%) that DC/Alexandria will receive at least an inch, with the actual total most probably falling in the 1-3 inch range, lower than current National Weather Service estimates. However, we do have a small chance, depending on where the snowband sets up, of receiving 3-4 inches, but I rate this at less than 20% chance at the moment. If this changes, which it could, I'll have an update tomorrow morning around 7PM. Ice and sleet accumulations will be minimal, at most only a trace, as the rain is expected to change right over to snow, with no funny business in between.

Impacts: Depending on exactly how road temperatures set up, we could receive up to an inch on roadways tomorrow, most likely within the 4-6PM time period, although roads could potentially be slick before that time. Therefore, the greatest impacts will be to getting home in the evening, as hilly roads could be hazardous. I only expect minor delays the next morning, as plows will have easily cleared all but isolated back roads. Although it will be a little breezy, visibility shouldn't be a major factor except perhaps the heaviest active snowfall during the late afternoon period.

Try to stay off the roads later tomorrow afternoon if possible, but otherwise, enjoy the snow!

UPDATE: 7PM Tomorrow if conditions warrant.
