I ended up trying awka with the best time being (NJOBS=24 NPARTS=460)
real 7:12.9
user 1:38:51.0
sys 20:00.5

awka is a bit too non-standard and the improvement over my previous
times with
mawk isn't at all significant enough even care about (I also tuned
NJOBS/NPARTS
for this run slightly differently).

I've been distracted with many other things lately, so others are more
than
welcome to take and improve on the work I've done on this project.
