In December last year I was given a Coleman 238B by a very kind retired gentleman whose father had bought it new when he was a child.
When I later examined it and compared it to photos of other 238B's I noticed that it uses the 237 generator, a ceramic burner and that the aluminium base plate was different from all the other 238B models.
According to the experts, this one is the only known 238B with these differences and may have been an early prototype.
Yesterday I finished fettling and cleaning the lantern and ran it for about 5 hours last night and I'm happy to say that it performed flawlessly :-)

Hi Phil The lantern looks good. What material is the ventilator made of and how does the rapid light work?

Thanks, Andrew. The vent is plain aluminium. The rapid pre-heat is like a little blow torch that works with a mixture of air and fuel from the fount. This one has a needle valve and small wheel to control it rather than the lever and rubber seal found on the Petromax lanterns.
