I heard from a friend that up through the early 1980s there used to be nude
single-sex swimming classes in some public high schools in WI. One woman told
me that she had heard from her older brother that this was just for the boys.
Can anyone confirm or deny and if it's true, did people not think it a bit
weird?

Mark.

In the late 1960's, when I went to Pulaski High School in Milwaukee which had a
pool, I seem to remember that at the beginning of swim class, you'd line up after
getting out of the gang showers and go to a window where you'd ask for your trunk
size by color. The smallest was black, I wore red which was a step above black.
You'd turn them in at the end of class.

There were times when I guess, the trunks were not back from the cleaners, and the
entire class (usually some 30 to 40 boys) would swim naked. No big deal back then.

The only crap I ever saw was guys snapping each other with towels.

That was back in the days when "Max" and "Weilgoz (sp)" were there....as well as
Janko, Spider Monkey (Romberg), Endres, Adamski, Cannon, Ms Goronja, Dufeck, Stan
& Dan Wiesneski (sp) and others.

My high school swimming was with trunks installed. However, as a UW (Madison)
freshman in 1966, we boys were required to take a semester of Phy Ed, one third of
which involved swimming. The water frolics were all done while naked, except for
the emergency swimming portion for which UW-issue pants were provided. Diving
caused major entry related problems for many! Ouch...

I went to a Chicago Public High School in the late '60s. Boys and girls
had separate PE programs. We were told on the first day of PE
that we (boys) should shower after gym class, and that swimming class
would be in the nude. I had heard all this from my older cousin, but the
news was rather shocking just the same.
Well, the first day we undressed rather relectantly in the locker room,
took our group shower in a large shower room with no stalls and went into
the pool area and had our class.
After the first day we all got used to it, and after that it was no
big deal.
I'm told the girls had to shower in nude before swimming class, but
after the shower they wore tank suits. I remember a girl telling
me that the suits were so uncomfortable that she wished her class could
swim nude like the boys.

I'm told the reason for this was to keep the pool filter from clogging.
Why girls could wear suits and the boys could not was beyond us. I hear
a few years later they made guys with long hair wear swimming caps for
the same reason.

This is no urban myth. That was how it was. How it is now I have no
idea.

I didn't go to a school with swimming facilities, but I know someone
who told me his experiences on the swimming team in high school. His
father was a Milwaukee policemen, and the son also worked for a time
as some sort of aide, but didn't follow through by becoming an actual
officer.

Apparently all that nudity did the trick, for my acquaintance said
that after swimming practice he's always give head to his teammates to
help them "relax."

Our thought for the day, a lesson from history:

The conservative Christians who founded Adolf Hitler's
Nazi Party expressed their faith in point 24 of the
party program:

24) We demand freedom for all religious creeds
in the State, in so far as they do not endanger
its existence or offend against the moral or
ethical sense of the Germanic race.
The party as such represents the standpoint
of positive Christianity without binding itself
to any one particular confession.

Are you a political or religious Conservative?
Remember this: those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

West Allis Central High School Class of 1973 it was a reality. It was the last year in a very old High School and the last year that they (boys only) swam nude in swim class. There were no windows and the only doors were to the locker rooms. The boys and girls had separate entrances. The girls entrance was locked during the boys swim class. The next year in a new school with a totally different setup, they ware swimsuits. When I tell people this, some don't believe me. You must remember no-one had video cameras, and still cameras were big so there were never any pictures. The only pictures are in my head of when we would line up on each side of the pool for row count. It was not a big deal. The teacher was a no-nonsence type of guy so there was never an issue. The un-supervised showers were far worse.
