Manthia Diawara,
will present a lecture about his research and the film, "Bamako, Sigi
Kan"

Friday November 8 - 7pm
Saturday November 9 - 7pm
Sunday November 10 - 9pm
"Bamako Sigi-Kan" Director: Manthia Diawara
Cosponsored by French and Francophone Studies Certificate Program, The
Center for 21st Century Studies and The Center for International
Education. This documentary was produced and directed by Manthia Diawara
about the clash between globalization and traditional African values.
The director returns to his native community in Bamako, Mali-West
Africa, and to childhood friends to see how they are coping with
globalization. This visit took place in August of 2001 and preceded the
South African-based conference on race. Through dialogue with local
citizens, artists, musicians, entrepreneurs and women, the filmmaker
addresses issues concerning the homogenization of culture, global trade,

politics and structural adjustment. There are some who are quite vocal in

their criticism; others are less pessimistic about the situation. Many
see an opportunity in globalization to gain recognition in and out of
Bamako. (video, color, 2001, 80min., French, Bambara and English) Free

Manthia Diawara will be present November 8 and 9 and will participate in

a talkback following the film.

Kombi is a poverty stricken city dominated by a tyrant king. In order to

bring back prosperity, the king is advised by his priests to make the
traditional human sacrifice of a young virgin to a mystical snake god.
Sia, the most beautiful young woman of the village, has been designated.

Lieutenant Mamadi, her fianc=E9, rebels against the decision to perform
this ritual and the village becomes divided. Struggles and revelations
