I have a group of students that would like to form a competitive coding club.  Has anyone participated in this?   https://www.acsl.org/

Any other options I should look into?

Thanks

Amy

While I have not participated in ACSL myself with students, I spoke with the founder and person who has been running it for decades last year as we were looking at using it to run a state-wide competition in Indiana. He was incredibly knowledgeable and easy to work with. He gave me access to the current competitions at the time and the problems were great. The only reason we didn't end up going with them is that it is such a well run organization, that we didn't feel like we, at Nextech, could add anything to the experience for teachers or their students and now we just recommend them to teachers interested in coding competitions.

Hope this helps!

There is (was?) a government sponsored effort that rolls around this time of year from one of our local congresspeople.  I usually get the letter later this month.  Call your local congressional rep for details.  They're probably only too happy to talk about it right now...

Another thought:  FBLA has a number of computer programming competitions (not sure about DECA).  If you have an FBLA program, the kids might start their club as a working group inside FBLA that does other competitions as well.  Throw the FBLA teacher some minor support and you might not have to be a full time advisor for their efforts.

Good luck!

Hi all!

New London High School tried out the competition mentioned. I did it with my AP CS A/AP CSP kids. I chose my best five students. We actually enjoyed the competition. It was easy to organize and distributes electronically to the students. However, we had a hard time getting it all done because of my students' busy schedules. I would consider doing it again.
