Educational Testing Service has just made a Praxis Computer Science test available!   Nationally, this is a big win for Computer Science, as more and more states realize that Computer Science should have a licensure status just like other subject areas.

The Wisconsin CSTA has recommend to DPI that this Praxis test be used to meet their specifications for allowing an Educator who holds a valid WI Professional Educator, Master Educator, or Life license in Mathematics(400)  to earn a Computer Science (405) license.  Initial educators are not eligible to earn a license via this pathway.   See this link for more details: http://tepdl.dpi.wi.gov/licensing/license-based-on-a-content-test-pathway

It will take a few months for DPI to receive the standard-setting information from ETS, set a cut score, and prepare the licensing information on their web page, but we hope that this will be done in time for interested Mathematics teachers to take the test this summer.

You can get a glimpse of what this test looks like at this link:

https://www.ets.org/praxis/prepare/materials/5651

If you look at the sample questions you will notice that they are rather dated.   However, ETS will be updating  the test in the next few years to reflect the current national consensus on what constitutes computer science.

If you know of a mathematics teacher who has some computer science background and would like to earn a computer science license, please pass this email along to them.  Also, please reply to the list if you have further questions.

That is great news. I know once I am able to do this, then that is definitely a path I will be taking.

Is there a reason why an initial educator can't take the test?

Hi,
I do not know why this is DPI policy, but it has been this way for a long time.

Right now at least, that’s the ruling by the DPI - perhaps that can change in the future.

Andy Kuemmel - do you have better information?

Hi Joe,
I don't know much.......this is a rule for all licensing areas that can add an endorsement, not just Math/CS .

Are there any current math (400) teachers who are considering taking the Praxis test this summer?  I would like to see if there is a need for some organized test prep......

I sent out an email to the math teachers at my school and will let you know what I find out.  I think a test prep is a GREAT idea!  Thanks for thinking of that!  I am glad to help in any way possible.
Thanks!

Do you know if they make any exceptions to the initial educator ruling? If not, can I still take the test and then submit my results after I submit my PDP which will be in about January of next year?  How long are test results good for?

The teacher in our district still holds his initial educator license as well.  I think it is the first 3 years(?).  I don't think they are going to change that, right Andy?

Andy,

Two questions.

1. I have my 405 license but wondered about joining the test prep group if it came to be.

2. In the AP Audit there is a practice exam but I am confused what exam is new for this year. It was my understanding that they create a new practice exam every year. Is the practice exam for the 2015-16 students called
AP Computer Science A 2015 Released Exam
or should I be looking for something that says 2016?

Hi Mary,
Dan Rohde is working with me on the Praxis study group, and we would be happy to add you to our list.  Most of the folks that we talked to wanted to prep for the summer test-taking window, so I would guess that we will start having some Hangouts in the next few weeks.

For others who might not know, the Praxis test is not required for CS teachers to take, but is a fast, inexpensive way for teachers with a 400 license to add on a 405 endorsement.

As for the Advanced Placement exams, both Computer Science A and Computer Science Principles have Practice Exams available to teachers who complete the Course Audit Process.  The Practice exam changes once in a while, but does not change much.  The Computer Science A exam was changed recently to reflect that the Grid World Case Study is no longer tested on the AP CSA exam....that is why the Practice Exam is described as "effective fall 2014."

The College Board released the actual 2015 CS A exam recently.  They do this about once every five years.  This exam is also available to teachers who have completed the Course Audit process.

Let me know if you have any followup questions!

Best wishes,
Andy
