UW-Whitewater will host a lecture on advanced automotive
technology and a showing of many hybrid, electric and very
high-mileage vehicles on Thursday, April 22nd, as part of UW-W's
Earth Day 2010 celebration. You are invited to attend and
participate.

Between 10-11 AM in the Timmerman Auditorium inside the Hyland
Hall, our new business and economics building, Mike Kane of
PlugInAmerica will talk about "Plug-In Vehicles: The Right Solution
for our Time". Then from 11;00 AM through 2:00 PM, at the north end
of Parking Lot 14 next to Upham and Winther Halls, representatives
from Ford, Honda and Toyota will show a variety of new hybrid and
electric automobiles, while community members will display their
hybrid vehicles and discuss real-world, year-around mileage. All
community members are invited to attend.

Mike Kane is one of the fortunate few Californians who has
driven a number of electric vehicles made commercially available only
in California, Arizona and Florida between 1997 and 2002. He was one
of the 320 fortunate Californians who were able to purchase Toyota
RAV4-EV's when they came off-lease and were made available for
private purchase for a few short months in 2002. As a prime mover in
PlugInAmerica, he has been active in that group's promotion of
plug-in hybrid electric vehicles as well as fully electric ones. His
speech will address misconceptions about resource use and pollution
production during the construction, use and recyclying of these
vehicles and will review the new vehicles, including the GM Volt and
Nissan Leaf, that are scheduled for introduction into the American
marketplace beginning this coming fall. An abstract for Mr. Kane's
talk may be found at

During the Advanced Technology Vehicle Showing from 11:00 AM to
2:00 PM, Smart Motors of Madison will display a Prius converted into
a plug-in hybrid using the Hymotion/A123 L5 module as well as a 2010
Gen III Prius. Zimbrick Honda in Madison will display the new
Insight Hybrid. Kunes Country Ford of Delavan will display an Escape
Hybrid and the 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid sedan. Finally, university
staff and faculty will be displaying their personally owned Toyota
Priuses, Honda Civic Hybrids, Ford Escape Hybrids, Gen I Honda
Insight Hybrids and Daimler high-mileage SmartCars, and they will be
happy to discuss their long-term driving experiences and seasonal
mileages.

Owners of hybrid autos, electric-conversion autos or
high-mileage automobiles are invited to participate in the car
showing. A campus map can be found at

http://www.uww.edu/campus

The Upham Hall parking lot (Lot 14) can be found at coordinates
(B-C,5), and the event itself will be held in the northwest corner of
that lot. Participants in the car showing will not require a free
parking sticker. However, if you wish just to attend Mr. Kane's
presentation, you will need to obtain a free parking pass from our
Parking and Traffic department off of Starin Road at map coordinates
(B-C,3.7).

If you are able to participate in the car showing, please either
send me an email message (ryb...@uww.edu) or give me a call (262)
472-5766 to confirm you are coming (and leave a message if I am not
in). You may park at any time after 6:30 AM in the NW corner of the
Upham lot, and you may leave any time after 12 noon. Parking
barricades will be moved by lot attendants at your request.

Cordially,

Paul Rybski
