Hello,

We have a family in Natomas that is in severe need, please advise if you have any support resources.

Family consists of an 11th grader and his mother. Family has been struggling financially since the pandemic when the father died of covid-19. Father was the primary income provider, and after his death, mother and son lost their housing and were living in a shelter.

The family now lives in an apartment in Del Paso Heights. Mother is undocumented and lost her vision in August of 2023. She is unable to work due to her condition. Gustavo works at a fast food restaurant and is now the main income provider for the family, while also attending school at LGA. Transportation is a major issue for the family as they cannot drive, and the bus does not run the hours when the student works late shifts at his job. It's critical that he keeps his job for his family's well-being.

Family applied for disability, but was denied due to mom's immigration status. Family also applied to CAPI through DHA, but has not heard back. Mom has been denied from multiple resources due to her immigration and housing status.

Family normally receives CalFresh and CalWorks benefits, but did not receive CalWorks in January or February due to a paperwork issue. Family uses their benefits to pay their rent, which is a priority to them after living in a shelter for some time, but although they are making rent, they often do not have enough money to meet basic needs. Family reports that mom has glaucoma, diabetes, and high blood pressure and does not receive adequate medical care. She visits Clinica Tepati whenever she is able to get an appointment. Family has reported being unable to purchase basic supplies such as advil, vitamins, and food.

Student is hardworking at everything he does and is currently on track to graduate. He contemplates leaving school to work more hours, but he is very close to earning his diploma.

Please let me know if you need any further information from me. Mom and student have given permission for us to share their information and make any referrals possible.

Thanks,

I'm not sure if La Familia would be able to offer support with other needs. If not, they might be able to point you in the right direction.

Hello Shayla,

If anyone in the family has Medi-Cal insurance, you can send a CalAim referral to get them a housing navigator https://apricot.socialsolutions.com/auth/autologin/org_id/109746/hash/7af22190efeb4927b946acd4da03fe5e80f65450

Mom can also apply for Medi-Cal insurance despite being undocumented. It would be best if she could come in person to a local Dept of Health and Human Services office and apply with the help of the staff.
