Subject: Parenting Youth (PY) Program Updates
To:

Good morning all,

The Parenting Youth (PY) program is currently undergoing changes in its management. Our Program Manager, Sharon Zone, accepted an offer to work for the California Department of Social Services’ California in the Early Practice Interventions for Children and Families (EPIC) Unit focusing on the 0-5 population. We are extremely happy for her, but we are also sad to see her go. With this said, the PY program has a new referral process and contact in case you need to submit a referral on the behalf of a youth parent. Here is a review of our services:

·         Our voluntary program services youth parents (male or female) ages 12-25 with a child 0-5 or pregnant teens under 18 who have been the victim of a crime and/or have been involved with the foster care system.

·         Trauma-informed mental health services focus on the parent-child relationship by increasing the youth parent's ability to respond to their child's cues and help their child to self-regulate.

·         Youth parents under age 18 may receive individualized mental health services to address their trauma history as it relates to its impact on their parenting.

·         Crisis intervention services will focus on safety planning and phone check-ins as needed to address parenting-related issues.

·         Both parents and other caregivers may participate in services when it is appropriate and safe to do so.

·         Case management services and advocacy will focus on stabilizing the family by making the appropriate community referrals.

·         Therapy sessions will take place in the home on a weekly basis unless otherwise agreed upon with the family.

·         Services are free to eligible families. Medical insurance is not needed to participate in the program.

Feel free to reach out to either myself or my colleague Michelle Rodriguez, mswrod...@ucdavis.edu for questions about the program. Please submit referrals to me via email at jojc...@ucdavis.edu using the referral form attached. Lastly, we are in the process of updating our PY brochures and will email them once they are finalized. Have a wonderful weekend!

Respectfully,

Johanna Chavez, B.A.
