Have you tried Love Inc? Or Furniture for Families?   http://www.furnitureforfamilies.org/                                                 Sometimes Goodwill has low cost refurbished?
Furniture for Families is a non-profit, all volunteer, 501(c)(3) organization. Our mission is simple: To provide children and families with furniture and other household items such as a table to eat and study at, a sofa for the family to gather on and a dresser to put their things in.

You can reach out to Chicks in Crisis too; they get random pieces of furniture.
