Dear Friends,

I have spent the past two days learning about the proposed Iran deal and discussing it with representatives of the Administration, on the Hill with Senators, Representatives and their staff, as well as other engaged members of the community, activists and analysts.  I am writing to you now, to ask you to make a phone call, send an email - however you do it, make your voice heard.  Members of Congress understand that for the security of their children, our children, and generations to come, this vote is the most important vote they will cast.  I am writing to urge you to the same understanding.  As you  know, I have been engaged in pro-Israel politics and the Jewish community for a long time - Over the course of my lifetime, I have been engaged in pro-choice, civil liberties, anti-death penalty, DC Statehood, human rights, prisoner's rights, etc. etc. advocacy and engagement.  In all of that time, I do not remember ever before having this sense of urgency - that if not now, then tomorrow will be a very different day for all of us and our children.

More detail is below, but, in short, this deal, while delaying Iran's acquisition of a nuclear weapon for a short period of time - also ensures that by the time my youngest child is heading to college, Iran will have legitimate nuclear capability as well as the missiles necessary to deliver a war head to US shores.  In addition - Iran will have had an influx of billions of dollars in cash and the ability to establish a robust economy through trade and industrial investment..  In other words, Iran will no longer be choosing between supporting its economy, developing a nuclear program and fomenting terror around the word (i.e. Hutis in Yemen, Assad in Syria, Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Islamic Jihad, etc. etc. etc) - If this deal is approved and implemented, a year or two from now, Iran will no longer have to choose between these goals, it will be able to afford all of them.

I have attended briefings and heard the analysis of those opposed to the deal, as well as proponents of it.  (Thanks to my parents for babysitting,) I had the privilege of attending a briefing by White House Chief of Staff, Denis McDonough, the State Department's chief negotiator, Wendy Sherman, and acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Adam Szubin - and this is where I stand.

I know you may not have been following this issue as closely as I have been, so I am attaching a number of important documents and am happy to discuss any of it with you further, or put you in touch with others for additional conversation.  I also am attaching AIPAC's action alert with bullet points and easy access to contact information for your representatives.  Please share these documents, and feel free to post on Facebook and other social media outlets to get the word out.  And please call your representatives!  It is our privilege as Americans, and our responsibility as citizens.

Background Information

After more than 20 months of negotiations, the United States and its negotiating partners announced a nuclear agreement with Iran. Throughout the negotiations, AIPAC outlined five critical criteria for a good deal. Unfortunately, the proposed agreement is fundamentally flawed in each of these vital areas.

The Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 established a procedure for congressional review of any nuclear agreement with Iran. Congress must now oppose this deal, which would leave Iran as a nuclear threshold state, thereby jeopardizing U.S. interests and posing an existential threat to Israel and other American allies.

Please call or email your members of Congress today and urge them to oppose this deal.

Phone Script
"I am calling to urge the senator/representative to oppose the Iran nuclear deal because it will not block Iran from getting a nuclear weapon."

Talking Points

  • I have consistently supported diplomatic efforts to peacefully prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. I appreciate the hard work of the administration to reach a deal.
  • Unfortunately, the proposed deal will let Iran become a threshold nuclear weapons state and will not guarantee international inspectors access to suspicious sites in Iran.
  • Congress and the president have repeatedly said, “No deal is better than a bad deal.” This is a bad deal.
  • Congress must oppose this agreement, and urge the administration to negotiate a better deal that will truly prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon.

Vicki,

Thank you for sending this.  I don’t believe there is anything more important that you can do in the next 45 days than to let our representatives know that the Jewish Community does not support this deal.  If we don’t speak up and lobby against the deal, the assumption in Congress and for current and future administrations will be that this deal does not bother the Jewish Community.  We cannot let that message be delivered.

The link in Vicki’s email below to email your representatives takes two minutes to complete.  At a minimum, please consider doing this.

Please also consider forwarding to your networks and urging the organizations that you are involved with to issue statements against the deal.  I was proud to see JCRC come out an issue a strong statement opposing the deal today – thank you Michael.

Knowing that we all love and care deeply about the future of Israel and the Jewish people, we cannot stand by quietly as history takes a turn for the worse against Israel.  The survival of our people has occurred because of grit and action, not inaction.  Please speak up today.

Thanks,

Pete
