We don't have a black Friday or Thanksgiving up here but what I am having  done is self promotion and therefore I bring to the table my business.  I have recently won two awards for my attitude to my business and my customers and therefore my philosophy towards business in general.  The Chamber of Commerce in Abbotsford was kind enough to award me the Excellence in Business for home based business award and with it does go a lot of publicity with everyone wanting me to be reported as being at their place front and center.  I have been in the paper many times over and a full write up of me and my attitude towards my business will be in this weekends paper.  I will be at the three day Arts Council Craft Fair and they have used myself and some of my jewellery as part of the promotion again this will be in the paper today and Friday.  All the rewards that you get when you win this award are outstanding.  You are fully recognized as a talented person both in business and in the community.  The award for Abbotsford is the highest award a business can receive.  Remember it is the Chamber of Commerce that is standing  behind you, so it is a very prestegious award.  The other award is for coming in in 2nd place in a design contest out of New York.  I have been able to make my own designs since my first order with Aaron.  I have jumped into the deep end and am doing the greatest swim possible.  I cannot thank Aaron enough as he was the start of me doing my own business and I took it from there. One of the greatest things about Aaron is that he never forgets you even if you don't order from him, you are still a part of his family.  I do my own designs and I make everthing myself (to sell at a Farmers Market that is a part of the criteria.)  But I am recognized internationally now and just cannot believe how far I have come in such a short time.  All you have to do is believe in yourself, and you can climb mountains.  Leslie

So what is your philosophy towards business that you won all these awards for?

How do you design and make everything yourself with Aaron's jewelry
when he only sell finished jewelry, not components?

I started out selling Aarons jewellery. Then because I was going to start
selling at a Farmers Market I took courses and was able to become an
accomplished silversmith. I have taken further courses and I do work in
gold. I use some of Aarons pieces but I take them apart and use the stones.
Aaron and I go back a long time ago so we do keep in touch. My attitude??
Well it is a very simple one. The banner behind my company is that everyone
should be able to afford a NICE piece of jewellery once if their lifetime if
they wish. I simply make that happen. I have a design that I make for
charities - for instance the breast cancer association. At Christmas I make
sure that there is a gift in every package from the food bank for mom. I
realize that I do give a lot of jewellery away during the year but it comes
back 10 fold. I have customers that have heard what I do, and have been
recepients of my jewellery. In a small city word gets around quickly. I
have two major stores across Canada that carry a different line of my
jewellery. Am I busy you bet!!! But I love it.You must understand that
everything I do I do it for my customers. I now cut and mine some of my own
stones. Aaron gave me a start and I ran with it. If you extend your heart
it will not be broken but enriched.

Leslie,
Congratulations on all that you have achieved ! Will you also be posting
the write up of youself and your attitude towards your business that appears
in your paper ?? So, there is really nothing you can do to promote your
business, for it seems that you have just done it all ! I could also ramble
on about all of the things that I have achieved in my lifetime (overcoming
Pancreatic Cancer -post 4 years ) etc, but I would rather read about how to
increase my sales and new ideas of promoting my business in this slowing
economy.

My business will be having a 20% off thru this coming Monday. I am trying
to think of something "Going Green" to sell. Might anyone have any ideas?
Seeing how that is were things are heading ??

These are my thoughts !

You can always promote your business in many ways each day that doesn't cost
a cent. You just have to look around you and see what is happening and be
there. Sign up for volunteer work or helping on a dance promotion, you
would not believe how much business I got when I was volunteering and
everyone saw my jewellery. They wanted it right off my body. Walk where a
bunch of people go make sure you always wear your jewellery. I have partys,
always give the hostess a huge gift then the others see it and they all want
something like it. You wouldn't believe where you can get your customers
from. I set up a table in the hospital entry for 4 hours one day and couped
a $ 3,000.00 not including the custom work that I had after. I stood in a
line up at a Swiss Chalet and handed out 20 business cards from that I got 3
new customers and I also got 10 of their friends. Go to Art Shows. I go
everywhere and make myself available all the time. I just had a phone call
from a friend of a customer (a very good one) who was a friend of another
customer that I met in a Costco one day. It can snowball if you do it
right. You have to put the effort in yourself nobody is going to do it for
you. I just received the paper and there is a one page write up on the
winners (each have a full page and pictures). I know that I am going to a 3
day show starting Friday and it will be busy. People recognize me on the
street. I am not a famous person but I am everywhere. I actually put my
prices up and my items are selling as fast as I can make them.

Dear Shipwrecked Treasures;
Thanks for sharing, there is some very helpful and inspiring info you
have given. It is much appreciated!
I was wondering if you would tell me how Aaron gave you a start in
mining and cutting your own stones?
All Joy,

Valerie

For awhile I used Aarons jewellery just as it was and then I began dabbling
in silversmithing. I became a registered silversmith and goldsmith. I
learned how to facet my own stones during the time I was taking some courses
in silversmithing. I seem to have a natural talent that after being shown
something once I can do it. Not to say that I don't screw up pieces - I
have done my share of really bad ones. Aaron backed me with everything I
did. He also gave me the idea of mining me own stones so I got in touch
with a local group and made a lot of new friends and customers as we went
out rock hounding. I guess this is just a second nature with me. everyone
tells me that I must have been a professional jeweller in a previous life as
I pick up on things so quickly. I don't know about that. Aaron I knew was
always there to back me, encourage me and help me in so many ways he doesn't
even know about. I watched his business grow and knew that he only wanted
the best for all his customers. He has great words of wisdom and doesn't
mind answering questions. The same goes for me, if anyone has any questions
I am here to help. After all knowledge is great to have but even better
when shared. Leslie

Where does someone become registered as a silversmith or goldsmith?
The rockhounding aspect is a great idea! Thanks. Valerie
