Hi,

I know it's been a while since I used this google group. But I'd appreciate your feedback.

Due to the high price of silver I am always looking to diversify  my product line. I am looking into stocking wholesale crystals and loose gemstones on wholesalegemshop.com.

Do you have a need for these items? Either to sell on their own or to use in your own jewelry?

I'm considering all sorts of stuff including cyrstals of different shapes, 'gemstone eggs', gemstone crystal wands, loose polished gemstones, carved gemstones, etc.

Let me know your thoughts... what would you like to see me stock on the site? What price points would you be looking for. What stones are you most interested in?

Any feedback you have time to send me will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Aaron:
I love that you are always trying to keep prices low.  Gems are getting so expensive these days I think I'm going to raid some little girl's jewelry box!  All kidding aside, my price points have escalated to the point,  I just look for the best deal I can get, period.  My personal preference is for  turquoise, onyx, amber, most things that are opaque but have color.  By gems, if you mean ruby, saphire, emerald, etc., I don't think my budget would run to those.  Now the lower quality stones can be used in some pieces, quite effectively, but Cartier doesn't have to worry.

Good heavens, I am rambling.

I prefer turquoise, onyx, opal, fossils and the like.

Shapes are always interesting, and there again the price points come into play here.  I like cabuchons, and other pendant forms, and some wierd shaped stones.  They are great with silver wire.

Carved stones don't do too much for me if htey are flowers, birds, things like that.  Here again a stone that has come topography and is polished offers me, at any rate, more design options.

Going along with that is variety in sizes which provide the opportunity to make interesting groupings.

Hope that helps,
Rolayne

Hi Rolayne,

Can you tell me more specifically what size and shape stones you buy and approx prices? Who do you buy from currently?

I will be very competitive with whatever I carry, but trying to get a better sense of what my customers need.

Thanks,

Hi Aaron-I can only guess that you intentionally sent me this email although it wasn't specifically addressed to me (?).

In my store, anything goes!  I sell anything ONCE that doesn't bite me back LOL.  Seriously, no stone is impossible to obtain as long as the customer is willing to pay for it!  I have a wonderful, talented artist that displays in my store that only uses natural stones, so I always carry turquoise, coral, sodalite, obsidian, carnelian, amethyst, tiger eye, muscovite, cultured, freshwater pearls,  snowy quartz, serpentine jade, bone, onyx and jasper.  But then we are in the middle of the Southwest.  He is just branching out with Swarovski crystal designs and they are very, very popular.

In my humble opinion, it's not so much the price of the gems as it is the price of silver and the price of the shipping!  I special order ruby, sapphire and other semi-precious stones

Rosemary,

Thanks for the insights!

This is a list I setup a while ago to discuss jewelry business issues ... what shapes/ sizes do you carry these stones in and can you give me an idea of what you currently pay (wholesale prices) for them? I want to be sure I can beat everyone else's price, which I am sure I can. I have only carried finished jewelry in the past so I just need to get my bearings before I start to carry loose stones and crystals.

Thanks,

-- Aaron

Hi Aaron,

The biggest sellers on Etsy are the ones who sell jewelry supplies - this might be something you'd want to consider.

Gabrielle,

I'll get you off this list. This is a group you joined about 2 years ago and has been mostly inactive.

Thanks,

Here are a few examples of what I mean:

go to Esty.com and check out Dimestoreemporium, they have had 59,967 sales since May of 2008 and Jleebeads with 40,404 sales since August 2007.  You can also google who are the biggest suppliers on etsy and find the info like that as well.

Hope this helps

Hi Aaron,

I use natural gemstone beads and chips, as well as natural carved gemstones-especially good quality moonstone in many of my pieces.  Also looking for good quality star rubies and sapphires at times.
My customers buy all kinds of things at a wide range of price points. For me, the quality of the gemstone is more important than the price.
Unique and unusual  sterling or fine silver beads and findings is another thing I look for, as well as pearls.
I also buy rough material for faceting and cabbing myself once in a while. Again, quality is what I look for.
Thanks Aaron!
