Lollapalooza 92, The Pope’s Mass in 87…and now Hogs for the Cause. Teams, we are very excited to announce that we are moving to the Grounds outside the UNO Lakefront Arena. The problems we faced at City Park this year and in past years were evident and, we knew we had to explore a change. Thank you for all your feedback and for filling out the survey that we sent as it truly allowed us to make an informed decision and give you, our teams, a location that can better suit our growing needs. The week after load-out, we started looking at just about every potential site the city could offer and decided that UNO possessed and checked the boxes of close to all the top priorities for our teams and patrons. We are extremely fortunate that we were able to reach a deal and are very excited for the future.
I have attached Google Images of the new site which is adjacent to the Arena and backs into the levee and the Lake. From the survey, we knew your top team priorities were: drainage, better load-in and more parking. We get that all in this new site. The grounds are extremely firm (it is all grass on top of shells and even concrete in some areas), contiguously graded with more drains, there are paved roads throughout the site for load-in (as well having grounds that are much easier to drive on because of the firmness), and close to 7,000 lighted parking spots. Also…..just about no neighbors. Which means, Friday nights should be able to get back to those of yore with less time and noise restrictions. There is more water access and much better lighting as well. Also, we should have access to the Arena locker rooms so we will have shower access and other amenities. The Gala dinner this year will take place inside the UNO Lakefront Arena. This spot will improve efficiency and remove many of our constraints.
I invite you to get out there and walk the site and spread the word. There may be a mental perception that UNO is about 5-10 minutes further from the city than City Park but having driven to it from inlets and outlet all across the city now, I can assure you it is not. In fact, I-610 to Franklin Ave. to UNO is quicker to get to from most places than City Park. We are very thankful for our years at City Park but the fun has just begun. Registration for returning qualified teams will begin in September. Regular registration in October. Let’s get Hoggy!
PS: Please keep this between us (no social media if possible) until Times Picayune runs a story this afternoon but we wanted our teams to know first. But do let your teammates know.
PSS: We’re extremely saddened to retire the pun City Pork. Please send any pork gems for the new site our way!
