HiThanks AD for having posted this article. I was looking for answers about SK as I recently did a 3 day short course on it. The second day I had a strong fainting feeling after I completed the Kriya and had to sit up. I also felt negative and low all evening. The third day was a lil depressed. I stopped the kriya and started it after a few days. I started to feel depressed and negative all over again. I also got impatient and nasty at times. I felt like crying in the evenings. I do drink over 2 litres of water a day which they say is necessary while one practices. I am in a worse kind of state and after the kriya my hand shivers for a good 5 minutes. After reading your article I am glad am not the only one. Was a big mistake to have done the Art of Living course. It didnt work for me.
Beloved Amy, It is sheer display of courage and benevolent spirit that you have confessed having harmed by Sudarshan Kriya practice publically. It would definitely help people reconsider their urge to run into trouble of taking such initiations. Through this post, I must tell my friends and followers that I keep receiving mails and feedback personally from people, many of them without quoting what exact practice they have been indulged in after reading my posts on Pranayama but such honest admission is rare.. I appreciate.
On the cost of being repititive I would once again like to submit to people, who are interested in yoga or other such practices that they educate themselves and show discretion in adopting anything in their routine as harms associated with such practices are paramount with almost negligible changes of complete restoration of normalcy once affected. Interested people may like to read more about it, you may go through some other such articles here.
4. Change your position to like a crawling kid. Once in this position, (a)straighten your legs and this will be lifting your hips while keeping your head as low as possible. Stay in this position for a count of 10 and come back to original position. (b) Now straighten your legs but now allow your abdomen to touch the floor while lifting the chin up. (this will constitute the Bhujangaasana), stay in this position for count of 10 and come back to original crawling kid position again. This completes 1 round. Do 5-7 such rounds.
Hi!
Thanks AD for having posted this article. I was looking for answers about SK as I recently did a 3 day short course on it. The second day I had a strong fainting feeling after I completed the Kriya and had to sit up. I also felt negative and low all evening. The third day was a lil depressed. After reading your article I am glad am not the only one. Was a big mistake to have done the Art of Living course. It didnt work for me. God Bless you.
It is not right to entirely blame SKY. What also follows is a good mental attitude. SKY does not proclaim to turn your life around. If you feel depressed, low, after doing SKY, it is helping to come them out rather than pent up inside.
I dont know why do you think so.. in fact I am not opposed to Sri Sri at all.. he is free to invent few more Kriyas and sell them at any price he wants.. and create as many hubs in as many countries as he wishes to.. at least he knows.. he is aware of what he is doing. But I am definitely opposed to ignorant people like you who despite being completely ignorant of the subject are challenging my authentic views on Pranayam and its preparation.
I had a question regarding one of steps you mentioned above. I have been doing Sudarshan Kriya for the last 20 months. I was wondering when you spin anti-Clockwise steps to restore your breathing pattern, Does spinning clockwise with the left palm facing up and right hand facing down changes your breathing pattern again?
The swirling left to right i.e. anticlockwise is known to affect the blood circulation rather than breathing, in Sufi tradition swirling is always done clockwise instead of anticlockwise. While this preliminary answer should be of some use to you. But its better you could get in touch with your Master or AOL teacher to get your doubt clarified. If you ask Master AD, he would like to see you have completed the preparatory and mandatory step of Nadishodhan before you engage in any pranayama.

I did basic AOL course.I did SKY 6 times ,which included 2 log kriya and four short ones.the first week enjoyed the High or so called numbness of being dumb, But soon after i started to realise that my ability to think critically has gone down drastically.I am not able to take basic level decisions and this numbness in mind increases whenever I am in situations where decision making is required. Its almost six days when last i did that Kriya. I researched and found that this kriya is nothing but hyperventilation ,and tried inhaling repeatedly in a paper bag to restore the carbon dioxide level in in the blood. This gave me a quick relief But have not been able to recover completely .I still suffer from bouts of numbness specially behind the temporal area of the brain during the stress hours of the day and my ability to take decisions gets marred whenever this numbness stroke occurs. Please help as I am finding difficulty in fulfilling my official and personal responsibilities effectively.Have i suffered from some kind of damage .How long will it take to recuperate?
In fact all fast-breathing exercises, especially without preparation are complete No-No for those who are interested in their spiritual development but people wish to experience everything in one day! What else Gurus can do? They have to run their shop.. who will come to them if they say self-actualization and self-realization is a long term affair. That you will progress only gradually. Who will come to them after knowing that? That is why they experiment with you, make you do extreme-tortures to your body and believe me if you are made to face the hell for 10 minutes after that next 30 minutes are real-bliss!
Thank you for the wonderful article! I stumbled upon this blog by chance today. I practised SK quite a few times (not regularly). I was confused about its authenticity as I have been about a lot of spiritual matters and gurus (but never of our scriptures or teachings). When I was doing the course and I started the SK on second day and my body got severely cramped leading me stop the SK in the middle of it. The teacher herself was perplexed. She came back to me after consulting someone else about this and told me this is because there was a lot of bad karma etc etc from a previous janma and asked me to continue it and the cramps would reduce with time!!!!! That`s when I just went back to being the agnostic that I have always been.
You have mentioned about `nadishodan`. Could you place tell me a good place to start practising this? I am a student living abroad and have no access to a school and would be grateful if you could provide some online resources.
Still I would like you to start with some other simpler breathing exercises and practice of Mool-Bandha. Your intense interest is highly appreciated and I would like you do deep-breathing, what we call belly breathing for at least 21 days before I guide you further.
1. This is approximate method of mool-bandha.- Sit cross-legged in lotus posture, spine erect. Exhale and empty your lungs completely. In this empty-lungs condition squeeze + pull up your anus muscles gently. Remember no jerky movements allowed. Stay with this contraction and pull for around 10 seconds (if you can not sustain it for 10 seconds then shorter period may be opted) and then release and breath in normally. Give yourself a break of 5 seconds and then repeat.
[Start with 7 Minutes of this exercise and increase by 2-3 minutes with each day taking it to 20 mins. Your aim is to be able to sustain Mool bandha for 2-3 minutes at one stretch.]
One last thing which might be coming to your mind on whether you should keep your eyes open or closed. The answer is better keep your eyes closed during the practice and feel every part of your body, your breath and flow of energies in your body.
Thank you so much for the detailed reply. I will certainly try this. Could you please tell me if it is ok to go the gym while/after doing these deep breathing exercises? As my work involves very less physical activity, I go to the gym 4-5 times a week. Thank you.
Although there is no restriction on physical activities like attending to gym etc. however try 20-30 rounds of Surya Namaskar with varied pace (starting with slow and gradually moving to fast execution) and see if you feel physically worked out or not. I trust you would not require extra workouts then. ALso this shall tone up and shape your body along with keeping your agility and flexibility intact.
Further to strengthen your energy-body you may follow those practices which Acharya ji has suggested to Arun at the following link - -effects-of-sudarshan-kriya/
It is what you can start now and comeback with your feedback.
I started with surya namaskaras and the Mool-Bandha today. I haveone question. When I contract my muscles should I also not inhale throughout the period of contraction (i.e for 10-20 seconds of mool-bandha) or is it that I can breathe but not release the pull on my muscles?
So my first question is about dualism and non-dualism. I know dualism refers to physical and mental conciousness and non-dualism refers to concentrating on the Brahman, the Absolute. I do know both lead to Brahman, then why the divide?
