Hello all,

quick turn-around on this one - Glenda has prepared a letter to the City about winter maintenance of bike routes - attached is a draft and we'd like to send it out tomorrow (Thursday).  Please have a look and if you have any concerns or issues about issuing this on behalf of the WUCC membership, please reply.

Great letter. A few small points - I don’t understand where the first trail is - do you mean the Hamilton Blvd MUP from Alaska Highway to the CGC?

Also why not clear the whole Hamilton Blvd trail? The packing sucks - hard for people to ride on the MUP from Hillcrest/Granger/Copper Ridge, Ingraham etc. In fact, it’s basically unusable by bikes when it’s packed, even for fat bikes. Packing is great for snowmobiles, but not  bikes. Forest suggested clearing leaving a skiff of snow and no sand to accommodate kicksleds, skiers  and bikes.

Finally, there needs to be a cleared connection between Granger/Hillcrest/Copper Ridge and Hillcrest Drive. Hillcrest Drive is the fastest route from those neighbourhood to downtown using the Black St. Stairs. It’s also the safest as it avoids many bad intersections. City should clear the Hillcrest Drive extension up to Thompson Dr. and the paved trail between Hillcrest and Hamilton Blvd.

Finally, didn’t get the point about the snow bikes and the Bobcat. I don’t really care how they clear our trails. Shovels would be better for the environment, but having trails cleared is the main issue I think.

I second this request to include the plowing up to Emilie Tremblay - such a key active transportation route - and reflects our most recent letters to the City about this issue - thank you!

I note that in John Pattimore's suggested edits he removed the reference to putting a snow fence at the west end of the airport runway. Snow fences really do work and would cut down on the amount of plowing necessary in that troublesome area. Please keep the reference to installing snow fencing in the letter.

Thanks.

That's a proposition for Community Services, who operate the airport, it's not a city issue. I do agree something there would help, but I believe the evidence suggests snow fences are not very effective.
