Hi,

Does anyone know what the current status of French law is regarding the use of encryption? Also, is there any other countries with encryption restrictions that one has to be aware of?

South Africa.

Government Departments are only allowed to use SACSA approved encryption.

And I know that we has same law in the old days (not sure if it has been scraped) that only allows for encrypted messages to be sent if (and I don’t know of the fact is correct) the decryption key is given to Telkom. Although I do not think that it will ever be enforced, South Africa had a law like that.

Hi there.

Arrie youre halfway there. The idea of sharing your encryption key with the post office was on the table at some stage. The responsibility was then moved to the Department of communications, together with the idea of digital signatures etc. The encryption key idea was supposed to be included in the ECT act but fell away. Anyway if it were to be included it probably would have gone the same way as the "brilliant" idea of the cyber inspectors ;-)

Anyway to give an answer in short, no its not included in any act currently... (that I know of)

Regards.

Hi There

For those that are interested - At last the Department of Communications  has acted! The ECT Act Regulatiions relating to the Authentication Authority were published in the Government Gazette on 20th June. Advanced Electronic Signatures are becoming a reality.

For those still confused about what Information Security Standard the ECT Act referrred to these Regulations have helped as they refere directly to SANS the South African National Standards for Information Security.

Seems there is still life in the ECT Act!!! Hopefully the Department of Communications will still be able to surprise everyone with the Appointment of Cyber Inspectors.

Being Old I have seen the impossible happen too often.

Warn Regards

Thank you for the heads up, Ian.

Whilst I am also pleased and excited about this development, I must admit to be rather perplexed about the choice of adjective in your last line.

Is “Warn Regards” to be seen as a pun, a Freudian slip, or simply a typo? J
