Hello All,
I do not remember all that were involved with the Dickens/Great Expectations/Film conversation at our last meeting (Marlene?).
It took awhile for the library system to get to me the
1946 film of Great Expectations. This film (in b&w) stars John Mills, Alec Guinness and Jean Simmons. I would not agree with the sentence 'One of the great translations of literature into film...' that is found on the back cover. It is dark (naturally) and sadly lacks some of the actual comical points in the novel. I will say that one of my favorite (although it was a minor one) characters in the book was Aged Parent (or Aged P.) and the actor who played this part perfected it.
As to my review...meh, there may be a better adaptation out there. For viewing this one I could have missed the 118 minutes that it ran. It is interesting to note that the director had not read Great Expectations before beginning this film. To me, that explains a lot.
See for yourself, I'd like to see what others think about versions that they my have viewed.
