Whisky in a barrel

Hi all

 

I am an avid Whisky/Bourban fan and have received one of these barrels as a gift. I have heard that the first time you fill your barrel you can trend the taste by using Cognac or other spirits. is this worthwhile as i am ready to fill my new barrel?

 

I found that the timber tap supplied sealed for only a couple of days then started leaking, so i purchased a brass one, this is the only complaint i have regarding theses barrels.

 

I have read near all posts and am amazed at how versitile an oak barrel can be. looking forward to posting my successes ( and failures ) regarding oak barreling as i am a newbie.
