Hi

Had a 10l barrel for a few months and have some Tennessee bourbon in
it. If you are new to barrel aging like me and wonder what the best
aging time is can I suggest saving some un-aged stuff in a seperate
bottle and use it as reference to taste the difference to judge when
it is good to go.

One question I have: If I decide to age some rum next in the same
barrel will the previous batch taste transfer from the wood? Can I use
the same barrel for different sprits over time (brandy, whiskey, rum
etc)?

Cheers

Good suggestion on aging and comparing to un-aged.

If you decide to age rum or some other liquor in the same barrel, yes
it will impart some flavor from the last ingredient sometimes that is
good and sometimes not. Some tequilas are aged in used bourbon
barrels, some rums are aged in used tequila barrels, some tequilas are
aged in used wine barrels and give it a little red tint. You just have
to experiment and see if you like the taste, if you don’t then you can
always make mixed drinks with it.
