As an astrophysicist, you will also need to have strong communication skills to present your findings and collaborate with others in the field.

There are a variety of job opportunities available in astrophysics, including research positions at universities or government agencies, teaching positions, and roles in the private sector in fields such as aerospace engineering or data analysis. You can also choose to specialize in a specific area of astrophysics, such as cosmology, planetary science, or astrophysical instrumentation.

Becoming an astrophysicist typically requires a bachelor's degree in physics or a related field, followed by a master's and/or PhD in astrophysics. This can take anywhere from 6-8 years, depending on your educational path and research focus. The Astronomy and Astrophysics Option is intended primarily as preparation for graduate work in astrophysics or astronomy or for a career in astrophysics, space science or data science.

This option provides a solid Physics foundation but also requires the student to complete a minor in a different subject. Examples of these subjects are chemistry, biology, computer science, engineering, environmental studies, business, marketing, material science, or optics.

Who is it for?
This option is designed for those students who desire a firm background in mathematics and physics coupled with a concentration in another discipline in preparation for today's diverse career paths.

Teaching options require a teaching minor from the list under the Department of Education. However, the only teaching minor that can be completed within 128 credits is Mathematics. Please contact the department advisor for specifics on other options.

The curriculum for the Virginia Tech Physics Astrophysics & Cosmology major is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in both theoretical and experimental physics, with a focus on astrophysics and cosmology. Students will take courses in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics, as well as specialized courses in astrophysics and cosmology. In addition, students will have the opportunity to participate in research projects and gain hands-on experience in the field.

Graduates of the Virginia Tech Physics Astrophysics & Cosmology major have a wide range of career opportunities available to them. Some may choose to pursue advanced degrees in physics, astronomy, or related fields, while others may enter the workforce in areas such as research, data analysis, or science education. Yes, students in the Virginia Tech Physics Astrophysics & Cosmology major can participate in study abroad programs. The Department of Physics offers a variety of study abroad opportunities, including semester-long programs in Australia, Germany, and Japan. These programs allow students to gain a global perspective on physics and astronomy, as well as experience different cultures and educational systems.

Everything around you is influenced or governed by physics. Physics seeks to understand the fundamental workings of the universe, from the smallest particles like neutrinos to the vast structure of the cosmos. It unveils the underlying principles governing the world around us and serves as the cornerstone of all natural sciences, including chemistry, biology, oceanography, and geography.

These tracks align with diverse employment opportunities for physics graduates, spanning high schools, government laboratories, financial institutions, medical facilities, data science, and high-tech industries.

Upon graduation, approximately 50 percent of physics bachelors transition directly into the workforce, while others pursue advanced degrees in physics, medical physics, business, law, or computer science.

FY-Launch class sections may be available. A FY-Launch section fulfills the same requirements as a standard section of that course, but also fulfills the FY-SEMINAR/FY-LAUNCH First-Year Foundations requirement. Students can search for FY-Launch sections in ConnectCarolina using the FY-LAUNCH attribute.

More than half of our B.A. majors, alongside all B.S. majors, engage in at least one semester of research under the guidance of a faculty member. Many students find the experience so rewarding that they choose to continue for several semesters. PHYS 395 Research with Faculty Mentor II is a required course for all of our B.S. majors. In addition to PHYS 395, students have the option to enroll in PHYS 295 Research with Faculty Mentor I as many times as desired. These courses provide students with the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research and acquire hands-on experience with various experimental tools and techniques, which can significantly enhance their resumes. Students may also earn course credit while pursuing internship opportunities in a physics-related industry by enrolling in PHYS 293. An approved learning contract is required prior to registering for PHYS 295, PHYS 395, and PHYS 293. Learning contracts and registration must be completed within the first week of classes.

Within our department, two student-led organizations have their dedicated physical spaces. Both of these student organizations organize events throughout the year aimed at fostering social interaction within our student body, as well as facilitating connections between students and faculty.

The astrophysics minor is designed for students interested in developing a background in the theoretical modeling and observational techniques of galactic and stellar astronomy, extragalactic astronomy and cosmology.

Students completing the minor are able to think critically about scientific problems by reducing complex problems to their most important attributes and are able to design experiments, observations and theoretical models that address those attributes.
