On Jan 6, impressed with the Googlephone launch, which took place the
previous day, I ordered one online. It shipped with DHL on Jan 8. My
credit card was charged. Both the receipt and the shipment details
emailed to me showed the correct delivery address. Spiffy, I thought.
On Jan 13, while checking out DHL's online tracking tool, I noticed
that my Nexus One has heading for Sierra Leone, Africa, and not
Singapore like it was supposed to. More amused than annoyed, I
notified Google using an online change request. I got a canned email,
telling the shipping details couldn't be changed for security reasons.
I replied to Google that this was unhelpful, since they'd done the
changing and I was just trying to set it right. No response.
Figuring all this was new to Google, I decided to take matters into my
own hands and got in touch with DHL. In the mean time, on Jan 14, my
Nexus One arrived in Sierra Leone. The next day, DHL responded and
promised to change the shipping country to Singapore. Their online
tracking tool seemed to confirm this: "Shipment arrived at incorrect
facility. Sent to correct destination." But despair followed hope:
nothing happened. Till on Jan 26, DHL's tracking status changed to
"Awaiting pickup by recipient as requested.", location "Freetown,
Sierra Leone". I confronted DHL with an obvious lie, who finally, on
Jan 30, fessed up that only the shipper can redirect the shipment
since they'd only done what they were told to, i.e. ship to Sierra
Leone. For two weeks, DHL fooled me that my Nexus One was, after all,
making its way to its new home.
Back to Google. On Jan 22, feeling they still owed me a response, I
went online and requested a status report, again explaining my
predicament. I received another unhelpful canned email, and I promptly
told them so (Google actually invite you to do this). No response. Jan
30, I forwarded my email from DHL telling that only Google can
redirect the shipment. You guessed it, no response.
Feb 1, I finally decided to give HTC a try. At least they have a 1-800
number in Singapore. They took down my order details and promised to
get back to me. So far so good. I only hope they won't send me back to
Google. Not sure I can take that.
