Hi everyone,
Many of you are probably aware that Shimano has issued a massive recall of many Ultegra and Dura-Ace cranksets, common road bikes. 760,000 possibly affected units in North America, almost 3 million world-wide. Chances are, if you have a crank from one of the batches possibly affected, you won't have a problem. But Shimano would like all the cranks to be checked and logged. Even if your crankset is out of warranty, this recall will provide a replacement at no charge to the customer if your crank is deemed to have a problem. So far, there have been 4500 recorded cases of cranks breaking, though that is a low percentage considering how many cranks were made. But it seems the CPSC and Shimano deem it a big enough deal to want to inspect every crank. The nice thing about this recall is that it essentially gives the customer a lifetime warranty on cranks that initially only came with 2 or 3 years coverage. Even if your crank passes inspection, if it fails later on, it is supposed to still be covered.
Element Sports is a Shimano certified inspection station, and I assume Blue Ridge is getting set up as one, too.
Seeing as the recall seems to be a pretty big deal, I thought I should make a post making sure everyone is aware.
Ride safe!
Josh
