Hi Winchester Wheelman,
Our Girls on the Run Shenandoah Valley 5K is just days away, and we'd love to have some of you out on the course with us. It is a pretty joyful day filled with the smiles of girls doing what seemed impossible 10 weeks ago.
If you're not familiar with Girls on the Run, we're a nonprofit program that works with girls in 3rd through 8th grade, using running to build confidence, resilience, and joy. Girls learn about being good friends, choosing good friends, conflict resolution skills, how to give back to their community, and so much more while training to complete an end-of-season 5K. Every season ends with a 5K that's less about finish times and more about what these girls have accomplished in setting and obtaining a long-term goal. This spring, we have 212 girls who've been training all season with 65 volunteer coaches, and 189 registered runners ready to go.
We're looking for bike marshals to help make the day run safely and smoothly. The role is pretty straightforward: you might ride as the lead bike out front, sweep behind the last runner to make sure the course is clear before allowing the cars to leave the parking lot, help keep intersections clear of traffic, or just keep an eye on things and radio in if something needs attention. The course winds around Admiral Byrd Middle School and Evandale Elementary. We have had two lead bikes and two follow the runners. The GOTR girls really enjoy having the bike marshals lead the way.
Saturday, April 18th
8:30 AM – 10:45 AM
Race starts at 9:30 AM
Park at Evandale Elementary, 220 Rosa Lane, Winchester VA
We'll have GOTR 5K volunteer t-shirts for you and post-race snacks at the finish. This event is rain or shine.
For those of you who've shown up for us before, thank you. Genuinely. It means more than you know to our girls and our team.
