So as promised, a beta of WheelGoThere is now available for download
on the Android Market. Please keep expectations in check! This is a
basic first concept app to judge interest.

What the beta has:

The ability to search based on map position
Browsing of nearby locations by category
Browsing of locations from the map itself
Viewing comments made on individual locations
Making comments on individual locations

What the beta does not have:

The ability to add new locations
Photo taking capability
And probably much more.

I expect there will be some rough edges. Please download, try it out,
and let me know about problems encountered / ideas for features.

As I said, this release is to judge interest, so if you'd like to see
continued development, be sure to let me know!

Awesome to see the beta's out!

I get a "package was not signed correctly" when I try to install. Did
you remember to sign with a release key?

Hey Hua-Ying,

Hmm, I signed with the key, uninstalled from my phone, and downloaded from the market.  It installs correctly on my phone.  Did you ever build a debug copy and install it on your phone?  If so, that error will occur.

That works! Now I can get to the welcome screen but where do I go
from there? I press the menu button but nothing comes up.

Just press back!  Okay, maybe I should update and say that explicitly in the first activity.

Yeah, I sort of expected back to take me back to the home screen.

So is the first screen supposed to center around my current location?
I get Tulsa for my first screen. I opened the google maps app just to
make sure it shows my current location and it does.

It should eventually get a fix and send you there, but in general, it is not always fixed on your location.  The map is meant more for searching -- so say you want to search in Raleigh, you pan over the general area, and hit search.

Just updated to be more specific in the help screen.

Great, Zach! I’ve installed it from the marketplace and had no problems. However, I don’t understand how to get to my locale without zooming all the way out to the whole country and then zooming back in on Durham.

I’ve contacted the people I mentioned at our meeting. The residential program is moving offices and the director will get back to me when they’ve gotten settled. The patent attorney was at a conference but said that he’d probably be interested. However, I don’t know if he has an Android phone (if I remember correctly, he has an iPhone). I’ll get in touch with him this week.

Cheers,

Julia

That's great Julia.  If the app started you at a random location, that problem has since been fixed with an upgrade, thanks to Hua-Ying doing some early testing.  However, I'm sure the mechanics of it can definitely be improved.

Hope to hear from you again soon.

Maybe I'm crazy or missing something.  But where is the beta?

Zach,

Congratulations!  ..and thank you for all your hard work!  This is really exciting.

Should I be able to access the Android Market with the emulator?  (I still need to get that completely installed.)

Michael, the beta is available on the Android Market as wheelgothere, under the Social category.  If you can't see it, it may be because the Market is filtering it out -- this could be because your device lacks GPS or network access, or because your device is registered outside the United States and Canada.

Lenore, thank you.  As far as I know the Market does not work on the emulator.  It is, however, fairly easy to get the application installed once you have the SDK set up.

Don't have an andriod sadly.  I might grab the emulator to check it out though.

Hi Hau-Ying,

The patent attorney is interested in testing but does not have an Android
phone. He's using an old Blackberry but he plans to upgrade in the next few
weeks to an Android. I'm meeting with him in the first week of May, so I'll
remind him again.

I need to send a reminder to the Director of the residential program. I
haven't heard back from him after they moved offices.

Thanks for keeping me honest!

Julia
