Are oral traditions still relevant? While oral traditions have not disappeared. Their settings may change, but their power and use remain. The image of an oral telling may be caught on paper, film or in digital format, but recordings are not the word shared live. The presence of teller and audience, and the immediacy of the moment are not fully captured by any form of technology. Come and hear Darryl tell us stories about climate change and a Bombay that we're fast forgetting. Come and hear Dan talk about a 16th century old Urdu oral storytelling form that has found new audiences in recent times.
Darryl D’Monte was Resident Editor of The Times of India and the Indian Express in Mumbai. He is Chairperson of the Forum of Environmental Journalists of India (FEJI), and author of Ripping the Fabric: The Decline of Mumbai and its Mills (Oxford University Press, 2002).
Dan Husain, born Murtaza Danish Husaini, is a poet, actor and storyteller. He is known for his work on Kaash (2007), Peepli (Live) (2010), and Losing Gemma (2010). He is a member of the Dastangoi Collective.
