This Thursday 21st May at 6.30 pm at the Cinephile Film Club, we are screening of the cult German film, Fitzcarraldo (2hrs 25 mins, with English subtitles) directed by Werner Herzog.
Winner of the Best Director at Cannes in 1982, Fitzcarraldo is nothing short of a very ambitious and grand film. Inspired by the story of Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, an Irishman in Peru who was known as Fitzcarraldo, Herzog regular, Klaus Kinski plays the lead role. He is very fond of opera and wants to build an opera house in the jungle and is determined to do so, never mind if he has to drag a boat, over a steep hill. Herzog actually used a 350 ton boat for those scenes, without any special effects. Since they were shooting in the rain forest among the tribals, by the end of it all, it turned out to be a very stressful experience for everyone involved (a documentary called Burden of Dreams was about the making of this film) - but nevertheless, this is the madness of film making at its best.
