Greetings from the Cinephile Film Club.
This Thursday, May 1st, at 6.30 pm, Sachin Chatte will host the screening of the Jean-Pierre Melville masterpiece Army of Shadows (1969, French with English subtitles, 145 mins).
With a rating of 99/100 on Metacritic, the famed critic Roger Ebert said of this film, "Rarely has a film shown so truly that place in the heart where hope lives with fatalism." One of the greatest WWII suspense drama films, it is based on the book by Joseph Kessel. The story revolves around a small group of Resistance fighters in Nazi-occupied France. This is not a war film, it is about the state of mind of the fighters.
The film was released in the U.S. only in 2006 and made it to the top ten lists of the best films of the year in most publications. Last year, it was screened at the Cannes Film Festival in the 'Cannes classics' section.
