Greetings from the Cinephile Film Club!
On 4th June at 6.30 p.m., Sachin Chatte will host the screening of the Japanese film Ran (1985, 152 mins), an adaptation of Shakespeare's King Lear, directed by the legendary Akira Kurosawa.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest epic films ever made, Ran blends Shakespearean drama with the history of feudal Japan.
Set against the backdrop of war-torn medieval Japan, Tatsuya Nakadai, in a memorable role, plays an aging warlord who decides to divide his kingdom among his three sons, a decision that leads to betrayal, conflict, and devastating tragedy. Known for its breathtaking battle sequences, striking use of colour, and magnificent landscapes, Ran won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design and received multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Director for Kurosawa, which was a rarity for a non-English film.
Ran frequently appears in lists of the greatest films ever made. It has been praised for its masterful composition, epic scale, and profound exploration of power, ambition, and human folly, making it one of the defining achievements of world cinema.
The membership for the film club is open.
