This Thursday, 9th July at 6.30 pm, Sachin Chatte will host one of the landmark works of world cinema, The Cranes Are Flying (Russian, with English subtitles,1957), directed by Mikhail Kalatozov. This love story departed from the triumphalist war narratives of its time to present a deeply human story of love, loss, and survival. Its breathtaking cinematography and the unforgettable performance of Tatyana Samoilova earned it worldwide acclaim. The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, making it the only Soviet film ever to receive the festival's highest honour.
The Cranes Are Flying follows the tragic journey of two young lovers whose lives are torn apart by the Second World War. Rather than focusing on the battlefield, it explores the emotional devastation of war through the eyes of those left behind, combining visual innovation with profound emotional depth, and remains a timeless masterpiece.
