*Greetings to everyone !*

*For the month of April the Alliance Francaise of Madras focuses on events
that highlight environmental issues. It has been predicted very often that
one of the most pressing problems in the future in international affairs
would be the question of availability of water. In this light the
documentaries featured during the week highlight different aspects of the
issues around water.*

7th April, 6:30pm, Auditorium AFM
Old Sea and the Man, by R.R. Srinivasan*** Followed by a discussion with
Mr. Srinivasan A documentary chronicling the post-tsunami situation of
Tamil Nadu, notably the range of human rights violations of the coastal
communities in the name of "development". Through the views of the coastal
communities across the coast line of Tamil Nadu, this documentary exposes
the design of the state to forcibly relocate the fishing community from
their pre-tsunami settlements that amounts to completely uprooting them
from their livelihood resources.

Package of short films from the Voices from the Water festival. In
association with Bangalore Film Society* Ganga From the Ground Up (Yves
Sadurani and Miriam Ciscar, India/ France), Shadows of Tehri, (Anirban
Dutta, India), Mountains in the Mist -Discovering cloud forest,
(Halsundbeinbruch Films,
CostaRica/Netherlands)

*10th April, 6:30pm, Auditorium AFM
A Hole in the Bucket, by **Leena Manimekalai* A factual story of thirst
and sanitation in Chennai.
This documentary seeks
attention to the human cost of the looming water and sanitation crisis in
the urban south.

*11th April, 10:30pm , University of Madras Bittersweet Waters –
Irrigation practices and modern challenges in South India, by Nathanaël
Coste and Nicolas Ploumpidis* *In association with the French Institute of
Pondicherry*
Through testimonies provided by a broad range of stakeholders from village
India, this documentary shows how the dynamics of water management have
evolved over the last few decades and how access to water has brought
prosperity but also led to bitter experiences.
The screening will be followed by a discussion session with the film
makers, and also with Ms. Olivia Aubriot and Ms. Anupama K from the French
Institute of Pondichery.

Biodiversity and Environment: presentation of Project Biotik* The project
BIOTIK aims to develop a computerized device that will help identify
species of trees of the evergreen forests of the Western Ghats in India
and the Annamite Mountain Range in Laos- two regions recognized as
hotspots for biodiversity.
