150th birth anniversary celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore in Egypt

As part of the on-going celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of Asia’s first Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore (1861 – 1941), the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture, Embassy of India, Cairo is organizing, in cooperation with the Cultural Development Fund of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, a retrospective of Indian films based on Tagore novels and short stories from Sunday, the 15th April to Thursday, the 19th April at the Artistic Creativity Centre, Opera House Complex.

 

The festival will commence on 15 April 2012 at 6 p.m with a panel discussion chaired by renowned Egyptian film critic Dr Rafik Al Sabban. Ms Khairiya Al Bishlawi, film critic will also participate.  The event will be graced by H.E the Ambassador of India Mr R Swaminathan and the Director of the Cultural Development Fund, H.E Eng. Mohamed Abou Seada.

 

                Five award winning films, directed by renowned Indian film directors such as Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha, Hemen Gupta and Kumar Shahani will be shown in the retrospective along with a biographical documentary on Tagore as well as a rare silent film in which Tagore himself acted. While the original languages of the films are Bengali and Hindi, all have been sub-titled in English and specially in Arabic for the Egyptian audience. The films have been selected by the National Film Development Corporation of India (Indian Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. The schedule of films is as follows:
