Synopsis
Beautiful. Ugly.
Complete. Incomplete.
Able. Disabled.
Within stifling dichotomies of normal and abnormal, lie millions of women negotiating with their identities. This film explores notions of beauty, the ‘ideal body’ and sexuality through four storytellers; four women who happen to be persons with disability.
Through the lives of Natasha, Sonali, Kanti and Abha, this film brings to fore questions of acceptance, confidence and resistance to the normative.
Home-schooled till her 8th grade, Abha went on to obtain three Master's degree and has founded an organization specific to concerns of persons with disabilities today. Financial independence, access to public spaces, access to sexual health services and information, are among a few aspects that govern how she decides to express her sexuality.
Kanti, among the most gregarious of employees at Apeejay School, has been in happy and difficult relationships and experienced a more than a fair share of heartache. She believes disability is not a pre-decided criterion for her partner and would love to be with an able-bodied man who acknowledges her rights and desires.
Sonali and her boyfriend Yogesh got married nearly three years ago amidst much cheer. Indeed, things seem fairly challenging on some fronts, but life is many more 'ordinary' things for them...like going out for dinner and watching movies together.
Natasha finds it amusing that people find her 'normal'. She wishes it weren't as easy to compartmentalize the 'normal' and 'abnormal'. Natasha patiently resists constant reminders of her perceived 'incompleteness', carving an identity of a self-reliant individual who loves to draw, write, play, and dream of a better world.
As it turns out, these questions are not too removed from everyday realities of several others, deemed ‘imperfect’ and ‘monstrous’ for not fitting in. Accsex traces the journey of the storytellers as they reclaim agency and the right to unapologetic confidence, sexual expression and happiness.
