If choosing to use the web server option you can install your Web Server of choice and point to your configured path store location. For Windows the default location is C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Update Manager\Data\ and on Linux the default location is /var/lib/vmware-umds
The PROBLEM with this is that every time VMware goes through major version change (ie. 6.7 > 7.x or 7.x > 8.x) the UMDS can only serve the Vcenters of it's own version. Yes, it can download fixes for other ESXi versions, but when you try to use UMDS service for different version of vcenter it doesn't work. After much of browsing I finally found verification for this info from VMware documents. So let's say I have problem with getting another IP and firewall openings for the second UMDS server: Is there any way I can run 7 and 8 version of UMDS in a same linux server and just use different web path. I'm not super linux savvy so help would be appreciated.
One of the most highly requested feature from customers with regards to the adoption of the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) is to have vSphere Update Manager (VUM) available as a Virtual Appliance. With the vSphere 6.5 release, this is now a reality as VUM is now embedded within the VCSA. The VUM service is also automatically enabled and associated with the vCenter Server instance which means from a customer standpoint, it is zero touch to get VUM up and running!
In addition to VUM being part of the VCSA 6.5, there is also the VUM Update Manager Download Service (UMDS) that can be installed on a separate Linux system. You can find the UMDS installer within the VCSA 6.5 ISO under the umds directory. To install UMDS, there are several pre-requisites that you must meet, some of which are documented here. The other requirements which are not documented are the additional OS package dependencies required to run the UMDS installer. While going through this by hand the first time, I found the following packages were required to install on an Ubuntu 14.04 distribution:
For those of you who know me, if I have to perform something manually once, I might as well automate it for the future ? I decided to create this quick shell script called install_umds65.sh which will allow you to easily deploy UMDS on an Ubuntu LTS 14.04 distribution. This can be useful for automated deployments or quickly standing up a lab environment.
At this point, you have now successfully installed UMDS. You can use the vmware-umds CLI to add/remove patch repository as well as initiate the download by using the -D option. Once you have download all of your content, you will need to setup an HTTP server to make it available to VUM instance in the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA). You can configure any popular HTTP Server such as Nginx or Apache. For my lab environment, I actually just use the tiny HTTP server that Python can provide.
Great article, I have really enjoyed your article. This is really great that VUM is now embedded within the VCSA. The VUM service is also automatically enabled and associated with the vCenter Server instance which means from a customer standpoint, it is zero touch to get VUM up and running. You show how to automate the deployment of VUM's Update Manager Download Service (UMDS) in vSphere 6.5 for an Ubuntu 14.04 distribution. It is really helpful. I have done by the help of your article. Thanks for sharing. The way you explained each and everything is really great. Thanks once again.
Step 1 - Download and extract the VCSA 6.5 ISO which contains the VUM UMDS Installer. You will need to copy the VMware-UMDS-6.5.0-4540462.tar.gz (located under umds directory) to your system that has the Docker Client.
You can now use the vmware-umds CLI to add/remove patch repositories that UMDS can subscribe to. You would also use the utility to initiate the patch downloads by using the -D option. Once you have downloaded all of your content, you will need to setup an HTTP server to make it available to VUM instance in the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA). You can configure any popular HTTP Server such as Nginx or Apache. For my lab environment, I actually just use the tiny HTTP server that Python can provide.
If you wish to persist patch store which is located in /var/lib/vmware-umds, you could use a Docker Volume to mount a local directory on the Docker Client system and map that into the Docker Container. This would allow you to not have to download the files each time for testing purposes.
The Umds service provides operations to manage the VMware vSphere Update Manager Download Service (UMDS) software depot used during ESX lifecycle management. This is the depot downloaded using UMDS. If the UMDS depot is specified, then online depots are ignored and data is downloaded only from the UMDS depot.
Next, mount the vCenter Server Appliance ISO file, copy the UMDS installer tar.gz file into the /umds folder and extract the installer. When this is complete there should be a vmware-umds-distrib folder.
Jackson came to UMD in 2002 from Princeton University where she was the operations manager in the Department of Molecular Biology. She brought strong skills in financial management, human resources management, facilities management and information technology, but she also brought a significant foundation in laboratory research.

"The Frontiers Conference attracts both business leaders and the leading academic thinkers in service research," according to Roland T. Rust, Ph.D., David Bruce Smith Chair in Marketing at the Smith School of Business and director of the school's Center for e-Service. "This year featured a number of papers on the topic of 'Making Service Profitable' with a sub-theme of making strategic trade-offs and large-scale resource allocations involving service. We're thrilled that so many seasoned service professionals have contributed to making this global conference a huge success," added Rust, the conference committee chair. The annual Frontiers in Services Conference convenes marketing faculty, researchers, and practitioners to discuss the latest topics and issues in service research and service practice.
Heather Evans, managing director of Morgan Stanley's institutional marketing division, addressed the attendees on financial management innovation and the consumer's bottom line. Her cogent session, "Using Client Satisfaction to Drive Share-of-Wallet," dispelled the myths of portfolio management marketing and invited portfolio managers to improve the practices and procedures of their business environments. Doing so, Evans concluded, would inevitably increase the "delight" factor, a mathematical measure of very high satisfaction that has been linked to customer retention and word-of-mouth.
Continuing on the satisfaction theme, Kevin Clancy, Ph.D., chairman and CEO of Copernicus Marketing Consulting, wasted no time introducing his topic, "Problems in Customer Satisfaction Measurement: Flawed Research Leads to the Wrong Service Strategy." "Most firms achieve only a "C" grade, the average is just 74% satisfaction," he stated. As a result, market shares and campaign profits plunge. "Derived importance measures are problematic," Clancy declared. Commercial market researchers must operate on the inter-related "consumer behavior, loyalty, and customer satisfaction" model the marketing trinity, he urged. Clancy concluded his comments, saying, "Sound customer service management is essential" for proper service marketing research strategy.
Claes Fornell, Ph.D., is the Donald C. Cook Professor of Business Administration at the University of Michigan Business School and director of the National Quality Research Center. His session, "Loyalty Can Be Bought; Customer Satisfaction Must Be Earned," intrigued the marketing attendees. Having founded the American Customer Service Index in 1994, Fornell dedicates his time to fine-tuning the metrics in the service economy of the digital 21st century. "The best measure of success in the service economy is how economies satisfy their customers," he emphasized. Fornell demonstrated a statistical link between changes in average customer satisfaction and changes in the stock market.
Dozens of additional academic papers were presented on such topics as e-service, customer relationship management, service marketing, service operations, service human resources, and retailing, tourism, and hospitality throughout the weekend.
